Costs & pricing

Why Behaviour Rehab costs more than obedience training

The question usually arrives as a comparison. On-Leash Foundations is $1,865. Behaviour Rehab starts at $4,850. Same company, same one-on-one approach, so what is the extra money for? The short version: manners are taught, while fear and reactivity call for work on how the dog feels, and that second job needs a different structure. Here is what the structure contains, and when the cheaper program is the better buy.

What the price buys

Changing a feeling is a different job than teaching a skill.

An obedience curriculum is largely set before the dog arrives. Behaviour Rehab cannot start that way. It opens with a full behaviour assessment, because a dog who lunges at other dogs out of fear may need a different plan than one who lunges out of frustration. The price, $4,850 to $5,760 plus GST, is set after that assessment, not before, so the figure reflects the plan written for that particular dog.

Then there is the length. Five to six weeks instead of two to four, because work on fear and reactivity is often slower than teaching a sit or a heel. Each day is individualized rather than drawn from a shared curriculum, and confidence building and structured socialization sit alongside the obedience. The program closes with two follow-ups and in-depth owner education, because the person holding the leash at home is the one who keeps the work going.

The smaller spend

When an obedience program is the better buy.

Not every lunge is reactivity. A dog who drags toward squirrels, hauls to greet every passing person and leans into the collar the whole way is often showing a manners gap, not fear or aggression. That is what On-Leash Foundations is built for: two weeks, $1,865 plus GST, loose-leash walking, heel, place and work around everyday distractions, with lifetime phone and email support afterward. Paying rehab prices for a manners problem is spending on a structure the problem may not call for.

The same goes for a dog with decent manners and no recall, which is what Functional Off-Leash was built around, or a young puppy whose only crime is being a puppy. The consultation exists to sort this out. We look at the dog in front of us, and when a two-week or three-week obedience program is enough, that is what gets recommended, at that price. If what we see points toward Behaviour Rehab, we will say so plainly, and explain why.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Why is behaviour modification more expensive than obedience training?

Because it is a longer, more individualized program that starts with a full assessment rather than a set curriculum. Behaviour Rehab runs five to six weeks at $4,850 to $5,760 plus GST, with two follow-ups and in-depth owner education, while the obedience programs run two to four weeks at $1,865 to $3,940 plus GST.

Can a reactive dog just do obedience training instead of Behaviour Rehab?

Sometimes, and the consultation is where that gets decided honestly. Excitement and frustration on the leash are often manners problems, while Behaviour Rehab is the program built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, planned after a full assessment. When a smaller program is enough, that is the one we recommend.

Why does Behaviour Rehab have a price range instead of one price?

The obedience programs teach the same published skills to every dog, so they can carry one price. Behaviour Rehab does not have a fixed curriculum to price in advance, so we quote within $4,850 to $5,760 plus GST once the full assessment is done.

Is Behaviour Rehab just a longer version of the obedience programs?

No. It works on anxiety, fear-based behaviour, reactivity, confidence building and structured socialization, with obedience woven in rather than as the main event. The extra weeks go to work on how the dog feels, not to teaching more commands.
