Worth it?
Is board and train worth it?
For the right dog and goal, yes: a board & train delivers hundreds of hours of professional training in a few weeks, compressing what would take six months of weekly lessons. It is worth it when you want deep change fast, and it is the wrong buy when your dog only needs polish you could coach yourself for $150 a session. Here is the honest breakdown from a company that sells both.

When it earns its price
The cases where board and train clearly wins.
Three situations reliably justify the investment. Puppies in the key learning window, where three structured weeks build habits that would otherwise take a year of correction. Dogs chasing off-leash reliability, because proofing a recall demands controlled daily exposures no weekly lesson can stack. And reactive or anxious dogs, who need their trigger rehearsals stopped completely while new responses are built.
The common thread is density. Behaviour changes through repetitions in varied contexts, and a live-in program delivers more clean repetitions in a day than most owners manage in a month of evenings after work.
- Puppies in the early window: high return
- Off-leash goals: needs the daily proofing
- Reactivity and anxiety: needs rehearsal control
- Minor polish: private sessions are the better buy
When it is not worth it
The honest cases against it.
Skip board & train if your dog's issues are small and your consistency is good: a $150 session with a written plan will likely get you there. Skip any program that will not teach you afterward, because reddit threads about board & train failures almost always describe the same thing: a dog trained beautifully for a stranger, returned to owners who were never shown how to keep it. That handover gap, not the format, is what fails. Every Northline program ends with an owner lesson and free follow-ups precisely because of it.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Does board and train actually work?
Yes, when the program trains daily in real environments and the owner is taught at handover. Its documented failure mode is skipping the owner education, which is why ours is mandatory and follow-ups are free.
Is a 2 week board and train enough?
For on-leash foundations, yes: two weeks installs loose-leash walking, sit, down, stay, and place to a practical standard. Off-leash reliability and behaviour rehab genuinely need three to six weeks; anyone promising them in two is selling.
Is board and train good for puppies?
It is one of the highest-return uses: three weeks inside the key learning window builds crate comfort, leash manners, and confidence before bad habits ever take root.
Will my dog forget me during board and train?
No. Dogs bond through history, not proximity of the last week, and graduates greet their owners with the same enthusiasm plus better manners. The handover lesson makes you the person who speaks their new language.
