Here is the honest version of cute-until-it-isn't: a growl over the couch reads as sass in a chihuahua and as a serious incident in a shepherd, but it is the same behaviour, and it is stressful for both dogs. What actually changes when the dog is small.
The mechanics change, the standards do not. Rewards get cut to pea size so a five-kilogram dog can train a full session without filling up. Thresholds get more respect, because from ankle height a passing Labrador is genuinely enormous. Handling gets taught rather than imposed: being picked up, having paws held, sitting through a groom. Markers and rewards do the teaching; any tool we use is sized and introduced properly.
Program fit depends on the job. Private sessions at $150 an hour suit barking and handling work you need coached in real time. The two-week Complete On-Leash Foundations, $1,865, rebuilds leash manners and a solid place command. Small-breed puppies fit Puppy Fundamentals, and day training at $650 per week suits little dogs who need structured practice while you work. We will recommend the smallest option that solves it.

Is there a little dog trainer in Calgary who takes barking seriously?
That is most of our small-dog work. Alarm barking is a practised habit, not a personality trait, and it responds to the same structured training we use with any breed. We coach it where it happens, then teach you how to keep the quiet.
Can a small dog do a board and train?
Yes. Board and train dogs get daily one-on-one training, a structured routine, socialization, and enrichment, with updates to you throughout. Socialization is arranged deliberately rather than left to chance, which matters when your dog weighs five kilograms.
