Private training

Private training for multi-dog households

Two dogs in one house create situations a single dog never does. They may compete for the same bowl, chew or lap. One winds up and the other often follows, or one stays flat while the other bounces. Whichever dog is being worked with, the other is still nearby, still learning something. We coach you on those interactions as you actually see them, without assuming who is boss of whom.

Real flashpoints

Bowls, chews and the dog who is not being trained.

We lead with physical separation for anything worth competing over. Food and chews are given in separate rooms or behind a baby gate, with leftovers picked up once both dogs are out of the room. Then unequal arousal: when one dog spins at the doorbell, the other often joins in, so we coach you to work a calmer skill, such as place, with one dog while the other is settled behind a gate or on a leash held by an adult.

The dog who is not being trained is the piece many households overlook. That dog is still watching, still learning that the doorbell means chaos or the kitchen means a standoff, so the plan can include how the second dog is managed while the first one practises. Which dog the hour focuses on, and how the other is handled, is confirmed at the consultation. Each session is $150 + GST and comes with a written weekly plan customized to your home.

When dogs fight

Safety now, a vet for injuries, and a professional assessment.

Growling, stiffening and hard staring between housemates are often warnings, and we want to keep them; a dog punished for growling may stop warning without feeling any better. If the dogs have fought, safety is the priority: separate them fully with gates, crates or rooms, feed and give chews apart, keep children away from both, and stop testing whether it will happen again. Any bite or injury is a vet visit, even a small one. A professional assessment is the next step.

Private coaching may still help with management, separation and reading what you see between the two. Where aggression is in the picture, Behaviour Rehab is the program built for it: a five to six week board and train, priced from $4,850 to $5,760 + GST once a full assessment is done, and a dog that has bitten a housemate is assessed before being accepted. The consultation is where we recommend the program for each dog, including a smaller one when it is enough.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Is there a dog trainer for two dogs at once?

Everything we do is one-on-one, so a session is coaching for you rather than a class for both dogs. Which dog the hour focuses on, and how the other is managed in the meantime, is confirmed at the consultation. Each one-hour session is $150 + GST.

How does private training work with multiple dogs in the house?

We treat the household as the client. We provide a written weekly plan customized to your home that can cover who feeds where, how chews are handled, and how the second dog is managed while the first one practises. Every person in the home follows the same plan.

Is training two dogs at home with a written plan realistic?

Private Training is built for hands-on owners who want to do the work themselves with professional guidance, and that includes homes with more than one dog. The plan gives you an order of work and the management for the dog who is waiting. How much it asks of your week is something we talk through honestly at the consultation.

Can a private session fix two dogs that fight?

A session is coaching, not a cure, and fighting is not something we would promise to fix. Separate the dogs now, see a vet for any injury, and book a consultation so the situation can be properly assessed. Behaviour Rehab is the program built for aggression, planned after a full assessment, and the consultation recommends what fits each dog.

Rules the whole house keeps

Describe both dogs, what happens between them, and who does what at home. Book a consultation and we will recommend a fit for each.
