Hourly rates are the easiest training price to compare and the easiest to misjudge, because an hour with a trainer is worth what you do with it afterwards. Here is what a private session with us includes, what the written plan is for, and the questions worth asking before you buy private lessons from anyone, so what you compare is the whole product.

What the hour holds
One coached hour, with the homework in writing.
The session is one hour spent with you and your dog. We work on what your week needs: behaviour troubleshooting, obedience development, relationship building and owner education, with a plan customized to your home. Skills are taught with markers and rewards first, and if a tool such as a slip lead suits your dog, we introduce it properly and teach you to use it. You leave with a written plan you can practise all week.
How many sessions a goal needs depends on the dog and the homework, and we will not put a number on it before meeting either. Every session includes honest guidance on which program fits, if more help would help. Private Training is built for hands-on owners who want to do the training themselves with a professional reading over their shoulder; Day Training and board and train exist for dogs who need consistent daily work done for them, and the consultation is where we recommend one.

Before you buy
What to check before paying any hourly rate.
First, check what the hour contains. Ours is a full one-hour private session, one-on-one, and we spend it on your dog and your handling rather than a fixed curriculum. Second, check what you take away. We write a weekly plan at the end of every session so the practice between visits is set out, not remembered from the car. Third, check whether the price is complete. Ours includes the written plan as part of the session rather than an add-on.
Ask, too, how the trainer decides on tools and whether you are taught to use them. We teach skills with markers and rewards first, and if a slip lead, a prong collar or a modern remote collar suits your particular dog, we introduce it properly and teach you to handle it yourself. Finally, ask whether the trainer will tell you when private lessons are not the right buy. We will, because honest guidance on which program fits is listed inside every session.

How much is a private dog trainer in Calgary?
At Northline K9 a private session is one hour, one-on-one, with a written weekly plan included. We do not publish an hourly range for other trainers, since rates without their inclusions are not comparable. Everything we run is private, so there is no group tier.
How many private training sessions does a dog need?
Nobody can give a fixed number before meeting your dog, and we do not quote one on a website. Each session includes honest guidance on which program fits, so if a different format would serve your dog better, you hear it from us before you book more hours.
What happens in a private dog training session?

Is private training cheaper than board and train?
A single session is one hour, while our board and train programs start at $1,865 plus GST for two weeks, so the session is the smaller commitment. They are different products, though: private lessons put the daily practice in your hands, while a board and train includes daily one-on-one training, a structured routine and a handover lesson. The consultation is where we recommend one, and when the smaller purchase is the right one, we say so.
