In a board & train, a professional executes the training plan perfectly for weeks, so the dog progresses at maximum speed, and you inherit the result at handover. In private lessons, the professional teaches while you execute all week, so progress rides on your practice, but the handling skill you build is permanent and transfers to every dog you ever own.
Cost tells the same story from another angle. Six private sessions run $900 and can fix a specific problem in a motivated household. Two live-in weeks run $1,865 and deliver about fifty times the training hours. Cheaper per problem, or cheaper per hour: pick the metric that matches your situation.

The hybrid nobody mentions
Day training splits the difference.
There is a middle road: day training at $650 a week, where your dog trains with us on weekdays and sleeps at home. Your dog gets professional daily work, you get nightly practice with a weekly go-home lesson, and neither of you has to say goodbye for weeks. For many Calgary families it is the format that actually fits real life.

Northline private sessions are $150 + GST for a full hour, one-on-one with Kaitlin, including a written plan to practice until the next session.
Is board and train faster than lessons?
Dramatically. A dog in residence trains multiple times daily with perfect consistency. The same curriculum through weekly lessons typically takes four to six times as long, dependent on your practice between sessions.
Can I combine the two formats?
That is the standard路 path, actually: most board & train graduates continue with occasional private sessions or day training weeks to polish and maintain. Programs are building blocks, not either-or religions.
Which format is better for a first-time dog owner?
Honestly, board & train followed by the handover lesson. New owners inherit a trained dog plus a working system to maintain, instead of learning handler mechanics and puppy raising simultaneously.
