Ages & stages
What to train a dog at 1 year
A one-year-old dog often looks grown up and still acts like a teenager some of the time. That mix is useful. Your dog now has the body and focus for bigger skills, and habits are not yet set in stone. Ages are approximate, since larger breeds tend to mature later. Here is what deserves your attention now, and what is better saved.

Off-leash groundwork
Build the recall before you drop the line.
Off-leash freedom rests on a recall that works when something better is happening. Put your dog on a long line, held by an adult, in an open space with mild distractions, and call once. Reward big when they come, then send them back to sniff, so coming to you does not always end the fun. Add distractions slowly: a distant jogger before a nearby squirrel.
Check-ins matter as much as recall. Reward your dog every time they glance back at you on a walk, unasked. Pair that with a solid down that holds while you take a few steps away. Keep the line on anywhere that is not fenced and follow posted leash rules. Roads, wildlife and unfamiliar dogs are no place to test an unfinished recall.

- Short down with steps away
Out in public
Manners for patios, sidewalks and waiting rooms.
Public manners at this age are mostly about doing nothing well. Teach a settle on a mat at home, then bring the mat to a quiet bench, then somewhere a little busier. Practise walking past people without greeting, rewarding your dog for staying beside you. If your dog stiffens, barks or lunges at people or dogs, give more distance and consider a professional assessment rather than pushing closer.
Off-leash heel, stays at a distance and busy downtown outings can wait until the foundations hold. When you want structured help, Functional Off-Leash is a 3-week board and train at $3,030 plus GST that works on recall around distractions and off-leash manners, with an Educator remote collar and owner education included. Advanced Off-Leash adds public manners and distance work. The consultation recommends a smaller option, like private sessions, when that covers it.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Is a 1 year old dog still a puppy?
In behaviour, often partly yes. Many dogs are still finishing adolescence around this age, and larger breeds tend to mature later. Expect some testing of limits alongside real progress.
When can a dog be trusted off leash?
When recall works on a long line around real distractions, not just in the backyard, and only in places where off-leash is permitted. There is no set age. Keep the line on in unfenced areas until your dog answers the first call reliably.
What should a 1 year old dog know?
A useful baseline is loose-leash walking, sit, down, place and a recall that works around mild distractions. Settling calmly in public and passing people without greeting are the next layer. Gaps are common at this age and worth working on now.
Is it too late to train a 1 year old dog?
No. A one-year-old can learn a great deal, and the habits being practised now are worth shaping before they settle. If problem behaviours like reactivity are showing up, a professional assessment is a sensible first step.
