Training a dog that travels for work with you
A dog on the road with you is a guest in someone else's workplace. Nobody at a client site wants to step over a dog sprawled across a doorway or hear it bark at the photocopier. The good news is that the work skills are few. They just need to be portable, practised in borrowed spaces, and rehearsed long before the first real meeting.

The portable settle
A mat that turns any room into familiar ground.
Pick one rollable mat and use it only for settling. Teach place on it at home with markers and rewards, then build duration while you work at a desk, take calls, and stand up and sit down. When the dog holds a relaxed down through ordinary office motion, move the mat to a patio, a friend's office or a quiet lobby.
Then add the parts of a working day that are hardest for dogs: rolling chairs, people walking behind them, doors opening, and lunch on the table at nose height. Release the dog from the mat for a short sniff break on a schedule, rather than waiting for fidgeting. Pack water, a chew the dog can work quietly, and waste bags in the same bag as the mat.
- One mat used only for settling
- Duration through phone calls
- Rolling chairs and foot traffic
- Scheduled breaks, not fidget breaks
Public manners
Lobbies, elevators and the colleague who loves dogs.
Hotel and office lobbies combine polished floors, automatic doors, luggage carts and strangers who want to say hello. Practise loose-leash walking at your side through busy indoor spaces, with a sit before every doorway and elevator. Teach the dog that a greeting happens only on your release, so you can say no thanks politely when a meeting is about to start.
Ask before every visit whether the hotel, office or client site welcomes dogs; each sets its own rules, and we do not train service dogs or advise on access rights. If your dog barks at strangers, guards space or startles hard at noise, a professional assessment comes before bringing it into anyone's workplace. In shared spaces, the leash stays in your hand.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
How do I train my dog to settle at the office?
Teach a place cue on a portable mat at home, then add duration while you work. Move the mat to new rooms only once the dog holds a relaxed down through normal desk activity.
Can I bring my dog to hotels on work trips?
Only where the hotel allows it, so confirm their pet rules directly. Practise quiet at the door and a settle on a familiar mat before the first stay.
How do I stop my dog greeting everyone at client meetings?
Make greetings something that happens only on your release. Practise with friends acting as strangers, and reward the dog for staying beside you while people pass.
Can Northline K9 train my dog as a service dog for work?
No, we do not offer service-dog training. We can work on public manners, settling and leash skills, and a consultation will tell you which option fits.
