How to teach a dog to stay off the counter
Counter surfing is a jackpot habit. A dog who once found a loaf of bread up there will often keep checking, because one big win can outweigh a lot of empty searches. So the plan has two halves: make the counter boring and empty, and give the dog a better job while food is out. The full counter-surfing guide goes deeper; this is the quick version.

Clear and redirect
An empty counter and a bed with a view.
Start with management tonight. Clear the counter edge completely, push food to the back, and never leave a roast or butter dish unattended. When you cannot watch, close the kitchen with a gate or put the dog in its crate with a chew. Then place a bed or mat where the dog can see you cooking. Lure the dog onto it, mark the moment all four paws are on, and reward right there.
Build place in tiny steps: a few seconds, then while you chop a carrot, then while you open the fridge. Reward calm staying far more than you correct leaving. If the dog does grab something hazardous, such as chocolate, grapes or a cooked bone, trade calmly for something better rather than chasing, and call your vet. Common mistakes: leaving one tempting plate out, rewarding only once, and yelling after the theft, which teaches sneaking.
- Clear every counter edge
- Gate or crate when unwatched
- Place bed in view of cooking
- Trade, never chase, a grab
Proof the place
Holding place while the roast rests on the counter.
Raise difficulty one piece at a time. Distance: step further from the bed, then walk to the far side of the kitchen. Duration: build from seconds to a whole meal prep. Distraction: practise with plain bread out first, then something smelly, then a dropped crumb, then guests in the kitchen. Return the dog to place calmly when it leaves. Children do not run the practice; an adult handles every session.
Coaching helps when a dog is tall enough to clear any counter, or when the kitchen feels like a standoff every evening. A private session at $150 plus GST comes with a written weekly plan customized to your home. Puppy Fundamentals and On-Leash Foundations both teach the place command, and Day Training includes manners reinforcement on weekdays. Which program fits is settled at the consultation, and a smaller one is recommended whenever it covers the goal.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
how do i stop my dog counter surfing when i'm not home
Training cannot work when you are away, so management does that job. Close the kitchen with a gate or crate the dog, and keep counters bare.
what if my dog steals something dangerous off the counter
Offer a calm trade for something better rather than chasing, and call your vet straight away about what was eaten. Never hand a hazardous item back to the dog.
why does my dog only jump on the counter when i leave the room
Many dogs learn that the counter is only safe to check when nobody is watching. That is why clearing the counter matters as much as training place.
does the place command really help with counter surfing
It gives the dog a clear job while food is out, and four paws on a bed cannot be on the counter at the same time. It works best paired with an empty counter.
