One clear rule
Give the dog a better spot than the cushions.
Hold the family meeting first. Always allowed, never allowed, or allowed by invitation only: any of the three works, and mixed signals sink all of them. Then set up a comfortable place bed beside the couch, at the centre of family life rather than exiled to a corner. Pay your dog for choosing it, deliver chews there, and sit close by in the evening. You are not banning comfort, you are relocating it.
Teach off as its own skill, separate from the argument. Lure the dog down with a hand signal, mark the moment paws hit the floor, and pay on the place bed, not beside the couch. Never drag a dog off by the collar; you will win the moment and lose the trust. Then manage the gaps: baby gate or closed door when the house is empty, because a nap on the couch at 2 pm undoes the evening's work.

Couch dogs are not a problem to fix.
Here is the part some trainers will not say: a dog on the couch is not a behaviour problem. It does not cause dominance, it does not ruin training, and plenty of beautifully mannered dogs sleep on the bed every night. If everyone in your house genuinely likes it, keep it and skip the guilt. The only real requirements are that the dog gets off the first time you ask and stays off when told.
Where we draw a harder line: dogs who guard the furniture. Stiffening, a low growl, or a refusal to move when someone approaches the couch is not a manners question anymore, it is resource guarding, and adding confrontation makes it worse. That situation deserves a proper assessment rather than internet advice. For ordinary cushion politics, a single private lesson, $150 plus GST, usually gets a household onto the same page with a written plan.
