Friendliness is the hardest distraction to beat.
The complaints arrive in a set. On leash, the dog pulls toward every person and every dog, convinced the meeting is mandatory. At the door, guests get a full-contact welcome. And somewhere in adolescence, the puppy who watched your face all day develops selective hearing, responding beautifully at home and not at all at the off-leash park. None of this is defiance. It is a social dog whose favourite reward is other people, competing against a handler holding kibble.

Most adolescent Goldens land in Complete On-Leash Foundations, a 2-week board and train at $1,865: loose-leash walking, heel, sit, down, stay, and place, proofed around the everyday distractions that undo them, which for a Golden means other living creatures. Families who want the dog reliable at a distance step up to Functional Off-Leash at $3,030, where recall is built to survive an approaching stranger with a tennis ball.
Golden puppies start in Puppy Fundamentals, 3 weeks at $2,775, where structured socialization teaches the crucial lesson early: people are wonderful and also not always available. Skills come first through markers and rewards, tools are matched to your individual dog and taught to you, and if a couple of Private Training sessions at $150 would solve it, that is what we will recommend.

Why does my Golden Retriever ignore me around other dogs?

Can you stop my Golden from jumping on visitors?
