Many of the dogs here are established family members, middle-aged and set in their ways, with habits as settled as the streets. That is fine. We train older dogs all the time, one at a time.

Hill and river
Two walks, two different dogs required.
Battalion Park is 93 hectares of open hillside with the stone battalion numbers laid into the slope, a pathway and a lookout, and it is not on the City's off-leash list, so leash rules apply there unless a sign says otherwise. That grade is a pulling test. A dog that leans into the collar going up will drag you going down. Heel on a slope, loose leash both ways, is the first thing a Signal Hill dog has to own.
Down the hill, Edworthy Park has two designated off-leash areas, at Spruce Drive and Lawrey Gardens, plus playgrounds, the Douglas Fir Trail and the Bow River pathway running through. On the pathway the leash can be no longer than two metres and the dog keeps to the right. In the off-leash areas recall has to beat the river and every other dog. And the railway corridor along the park is private property, so a dog that bolts toward it is a real problem.

Older dogs welcome
Retraining a settled family dog without starting over.
A settled dog does not need a puppy program. Most Signal Hill dogs do best with Complete On-Leash Foundations, two weeks at $1,865 plus GST, which rebuilds loose-leash walking and heel and comes with lifetime phone and email support. If the family wants the dog loose at Edworthy, Functional Off-Leash is three weeks at $3,030 with an Educator e-collar included, introduced properly and taught to you. Older dogs take to markers and rewards just as readily; they simply have more history to unlearn.
Private Training at $150 per hour happens on your own hillside and leaves a written weekly plan behind, so the whole household walks the dog the same way. Families commuting down the hill use Day Training at $650 per week with a weekly one-hour go-home lesson, and every board and train includes owner updates and free follow-ups. One caution: confirm Edworthy's current off-leash boundaries on calgary.ca before you let the dog loose, and treat Battalion Park as leash territory.
