Brentwood is an established northwest community from the 1960s, with mature trees, its own LRT station and the University of Calgary nearby. Its defining feature for dog owners is Nose Hill Park on the doorstep, close enough that most residents walk to its off-leash areas. The households are mixed too: long-time owners, adopted rescue dogs and student households, all sharing the same sidewalks and the same hill.

Living beside Nose Hill
Nose Hill is on-leash until a sign says otherwise.
Nose Hill Park is 1,129 hectares of native grassland with designated off-leash areas inside it, and the City's rule is blunt: outside those signed areas, including on the asphalt pathways, the dog is on-leash. Brentwood dogs walk in from John Laurie Boulevard, so the first skill is a quiet on-leash climb past other dogs, cyclists and joggers on the shared pathway before the leash ever comes off. A dog that cannot do that calmly has not earned the next part.
Once the sign says off-leash, the hill turns into the best recall test in the northwest: deer, coyotes, porcupines, ground squirrels and everyone else's dog. The City's own advice is never to approach or feed a coyote, which is easy for you and hard for a dog with no recall. Off-leash there is a privilege the dog earns by coming back through a distraction, and the City also lists two neighbourhood off-leash areas inside Brentwood itself for shorter sessions.

Two requests come up in Brentwood again and again. Rescue dogs carrying anxiety or reactivity fit Behaviour Rehab, a 5 to 6 week board and train at $4,850 to $5,760 plus GST, customized after a full assessment, with two follow-ups and deep owner education. Dogs who already walk to Nose Hill every day usually want Functional Off-Leash, 3 weeks at $3,030 plus GST, which builds a recall that survives a deer and includes an Educator remote collar, which we teach you to use.
Nothing here is a group class. Student households use Day Training at $650 per week, Monday to Friday, with the weekly one-hour go-home lesson doubling as the roommate briefing. Private sessions at $150 an hour with a written weekly plan can start on your own block and end on the hill. A caution: we verified Nose Hill's and Brentwood's off-leash areas on calgary.ca, but signs move, so check the current map before your dog runs loose.
