Behaviour help · Calgary
Do you need a dog behaviourist in Calgary, or a behaviour trainer?
If your dog's problem is fear, reactivity, guarding, or anxiety, you likely need a trainer who specializes in behaviour modification, which is exactly what Northline K9's Behaviour Rehab is. A credentialed veterinary behaviourist, a specialist vet who can prescribe medication, is the right call when there may be a medical driver. This page explains the difference honestly so you spend your money once.

The titles, decoded
Three different professionals share one label.
In Canada, almost anyone can call themselves a behaviourist, so the word tells you little. The meaningful categories are: veterinary behaviourists, who are veterinarians with specialist credentials who diagnose medical causes and prescribe; academic behaviour consultants, who assess and design plans but often do not train hands-on; and behaviour-specialized trainers, who do the daily counter-conditioning work that actually changes what your dog does.
For most barking, lunging, guarding, and anxiety cases, the daily hands-on work is the missing piece, and that is trainer territory. The professions also work well in sequence: a vet rules out pain or thyroid issues, then training rebuilds the behaviour.
- Sudden behaviour change? See your vet first
- Possible medical driver: veterinary behaviourist
- Fear, reactivity, guarding: behaviour-focused trainer
- Not sure? A $150 assessment session sorts it
Where Northline sits
The hands-on end of behaviour work.
Kaitlin is not a veterinarian and will tell you plainly when a case smells medical and belongs at a clinic first. What she brings is thirteen years of reading dogs and a residential program where behaviour work happens all day rather than one hour a week: assessment, management, counter-conditioning, confidence building, and owner education, over five to six weeks.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
How much does a dog behaviourist cost in Calgary?
Veterinary behaviour consults typically bill like specialist vet appointments. On the training side, Northline's behaviour assessment work starts at a $150 private session, and full residential Behaviour Rehab runs $4,850 to $5,760 + GST.
When should I see a vet instead of a trainer?
Whenever behaviour changes suddenly in an adult dog, aggression appears without a trigger pattern, or there are signs of pain. Rule out the body first; training cannot fix a toothache.
Can training and medication work together?
Yes, and for some anxious dogs the combination outperforms either alone. Medication from a vet can lower the baseline enough for training to get traction. We happily work alongside your vet's plan.
Is a behaviourist worth it for leash reactivity?
Straight leash reactivity rarely needs a veterinary specialist. It is bread-and-butter behaviour training: threshold work, counter-conditioning, and handler skills, the core of what our rehab and private sessions do.
