Board and train when you are recovering from surgery
A healing incision and a dog who greets you at chest height are a poor match. When your surgeon says no lifting, no bracing and no icy sidewalks for a while, the dog still needs structure every day. A live-in program carries that structure while you heal, and it works on the manners that matter most to someone moving carefully.

Covering the gap
What a live-in program handles while you heal.
During board and train, your dog gets daily one-on-one training, a structured routine, socialization and enrichment, with updates sent to you. The training you cannot do still happens, and the energy a restless dog might aim at the couch, the door or you has somewhere to go. You rest. Someone else holds the leash. Visits are gently discouraged because they interrupt the routine, which suits a recovery schedule anyway.
For a recovering owner, the skills worth prioritizing are the ones that spare a body that cannot brace. Loose-leash walking means fewer sudden yanks on a sore shoulder or abdomen. A solid place command gives the dog a job while you shuffle to the kitchen. Four paws on the floor matters when you come through the door with crutches or a walker. On-Leash Foundations, two weeks at $1,865 + GST, works on loose-leash walking, heel, sit, stay, down and place.
- Loose-leash walking without sudden lunges
- Place command for quiet indoor time
- Four paws down at greetings
- Updates while you rest
Bring a helper
A handover lesson with a second pair of hands.
Every board and train ends with a handover lesson, and after surgery it makes sense to plan it with a helper present: a partner, relative or friend who can take the leash for the walking portion. We show both of you the cues, how the slip lead and training collar are used, and what the dog has been working on. Your helper handles anything physical while you watch, learn the routine and ask questions from a chair if you need one.
When your doctor clears you to walk the dog yourself, the leash manners should still be there if your helper has kept them in practice. Start on a quiet stretch of sidewalk, short and slow, with your helper nearby for the early outings if that feels wiser. Free follow-up sessions are part of every board and train, so you can ask to save yours for when you are back on your feet. On-Leash Foundations also includes lifetime phone and email support.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Can I send my dog to board and train while I recover from surgery?
Yes. Board and train is a live-in program, so your dog is trained and cared for daily while you are off your feet. The consultation is where we recommend which program fits your dog and your recovery.
What manners matter most for an owner recovering from surgery?
Loose-leash walking, a reliable place command and calm, feet-on-the-floor greetings tend to matter most. Those are the moments where a pulling or jumping dog is hardest on a body that is healing.
Who should come to the handover lesson after my surgery?
Come yourself, and bring whoever will do the physical dog care while you heal. We teach both of you the cues and the tools so the routine stays consistent at home.
Is private training an option instead of board and train after surgery?
Private Training is $150 + GST per one-hour session with a written plan you practise all week, so it depends on someone at home doing that practice. That may not be realistic right after an operation, so the consultation weighs whether a helper could carry it or a live-in program fits better.
