Board & train
Board and train for Vizslas
Vizslas earned the nickname velcro dog honestly. Many follow you to the bathroom, lean their whole weight on your legs, and then, once outside, spot a bird and forget you exist. That mix of clinginess and a big engine shapes how we approach them. A soft touch matters, and so does a recall that holds when a runner's dog sees open ground.

Soft dog, big engine
Recall for a dog that wilts under pressure but bolts at birds.
In our experience, many Vizslas shut down quickly under harsh handling, yet hunt with total focus once a bird lifts. Daily one-on-one work builds recall through markers and rewards first, then proofs it around the scent, movement and wings that often pull this breed away. When a remote collar is a good fit, it is introduced properly, paired with praise and taught to you, so the sensitive ones are not rushed.
Functional Off-Leash, three weeks at $3,030 plus GST, works on recall around distractions, off-leash house manners and distraction training, with an Educator remote collar included. Advanced Off-Leash, four weeks at $3,940 plus GST, adds off-leash heel and commands at distance, useful if your Vizsla runs or hikes with you. Our Vizsla training guide covers method in detail; this page is about which program suits.
- Recall proofed around birds
- Remote collar introduced properly
- Place work for settling
- Heel beside a running owner
Running partners
Bringing the velcro dog home with some independence.
Part of the structured routine is time spent settled rather than glued to a person. Place work gives a clingy dog practice at relaxing without leaning on someone. The handover lesson shows you the recall cues, how the collar is used and reward timing, so your voice carries the same meaning as ours did. Social-media updates and personal phone or email check-ins keep you in the loop without visits interrupting the routine.
At home, the owner keeps recall honest: call once, reward generously, and use a long line in new places before trusting open ground. Daily exercise still matters for this breed, though a run often works better with a heel at the start and a settle at the end. The consultation looks at your dog's sensitivity and your plans, and recommends a smaller program when it is enough.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Is vizsla board and train too much for a sensitive dog?
It depends on the dog, which is why the consultation comes first. Training leads with markers and rewards, and any tool is introduced properly and taught to you. Updates during the stay keep you informed.
Which board and train vizsla program helps with recall?
Functional Off-Leash works on recall around distractions and includes an Educator remote collar. Advanced Off-Leash adds off-leash heel and distance commands for dogs who join you everywhere.
How much is a vizsla training program?
Functional Off-Leash is $3,030 plus GST and Advanced Off-Leash is $3,940 plus GST. Puppy Fundamentals is $2,775 plus GST for young Vizslas, and Private Training is $150 plus GST per one-hour session.
Can board and train help my Vizsla's clinginess?
Place work and a structured routine give a velcro dog practice at settling on its own. If the clinginess looks like real anxiety when you leave, Behaviour Rehab is the program built for anxiety, planned after a full assessment, and the consultation is where that is discussed.
