Breed guide

How to train a Vizsla

A Vizsla is a velcro athlete: glued to you in the house, gone like a shot outside. The breed needs daily running, real mental work and a recall that holds around birds, dogs and joggers. This guide covers what Vizslas are actually like to live with, the training that fits them, and the mistakes that turn a sweet adolescent into a frantic one.

The breed

An athlete that cannot be alone.

The Vizsla was bred to hunt all day at a gallop, then sleep against a human at night. Both halves matter. The stamina means a walk around the block does nothing; the attachment means the same dog that runs ten kilometres happily will scream, drool or chew drywall when left alone. Owners usually notice the shadowing first: this is a dog that follows you into the bathroom, every time.

Adolescence is where it wobbles. The puppy who came when called now bolts after magpies, pulls like a kite line, and forgets its own name near other dogs. None of that is disobedience. It is a fast, sensitive hunting dog running adult drive on a teenage brain, and it needs structure before those habits set. Skip the daily run for a week and the wildness moves indoors.

  • Endless stamina, real exercise needs
  • Shadowing and separation anxiety
  • Adolescent bolting after birds
  • Pulling hard on leash

Training that fits

Run the body, then teach the brain.

Exercise first, then train: a Vizsla that has run can think. We teach skills with markers and rewards, because this breed is soft and shuts down under heavy-handed corrections. The priorities, in order: calm alone time in a crate, loose-leash walking, a place command with real duration, and a recall proofed around distractions. For off-leash reliability we introduce a modern Educator e-collar properly and teach owners to use it as information, not intimidation.

The classic mistake is feeding the engine and skipping the off switch: endless fetch builds a fitter, more frantic dog. Calgary adds a wrinkle, because that thin coat means winter gear and shorter outings in deep cold, so indoor brain work has to carry part of the load. For most adolescent Vizslas, our Functional Off-Leash program, a 3-week board and train at $3,030 plus GST, builds the recall this breed actually needs.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Are Vizslas easy to train?

They learn fast and want to work with you, so teaching skills is the easy part. The hard part is the energy and the attachment: an under-exercised, under-structured Vizsla unravels quickly. Easy to teach, demanding to live with is the honest summary.

What are the most common Vizsla behaviour problems?

Separation anxiety leads the list, followed by leash pulling and adolescent recall failure around birds and dogs. Most of it traces back to too much freedom too early and not enough structured exercise. All three respond well to training that fixes the routine, not just the symptom.

How should Vizsla puppy training start?

Start with crate comfort and calm alone time from day one, before the velcro habit hardens. Layer in name response, loose-leash basics and short recall games with food and play. Keep sessions brief; a young Vizsla's body outlasts its focus.

Any Vizsla training tips for the recall?

Pay generously every single time your Vizsla checks in, and never call the dog just to end the fun. Proof the recall in stages around escalating distractions instead of hoping for the best. For true off-leash freedom, a properly conditioned e-collar gives you a way to reach a dog in full flight.
