Board and train for snowbirds

Leaving for the winter changes the question. A dog who rides along spends long hours in a vehicle, walks unfamiliar streets and settles into a home that is not yours. A dog who stays needs somewhere structured to wait out the cold. Either way, the training is simplest to arrange in the fall, while you are still home to attend the handover.

Two winter plans

Train for the trip, or board the dog who stays.

If your dog stays in Calgary while you travel, graduate boarding is available at $65 + GST per night, but only for dogs who have completed a program or belong to existing clients. That limit is deliberate: a graduate already knows the routine and the cues, so the stay continues the structure instead of interrupting it. As plain arithmetic, a 30-night stay comes to $1,950 + GST. Optional refresher work can be added.

If your dog comes with you, a program before departure is the best use of the fall. Long drives, motel rooms, rest stops and a rented winter place all ask for a short list: settle in a crate or on a mat, walk on a loose leash, and meet strangers without leaping. The consultation weighs your dog and your itinerary, then recommends a program, favouring the lighter option whenever it covers the need.

On the road

Travel manners and what to arrange before you go.

A dog heading south benefits from settling quietly in the car, walking politely through busy rest stops and holding place on a mat in a rental. On-Leash Foundations, two weeks at $1,865 + GST, works on place, sit, down and loose-leash walking around distractions, and includes lifetime phone and email support, handy when you are far from home. For a dog with good basics, Functional Off-Leash works on recall around distractions, with an Educator remote collar included.

Schedule the handover lesson for a date you are still in town, and use your free follow-up session before you leave if timing allows. Pack the tools that came home with your program, and bring a familiar mat for place. Check the leash and pet rules where you will winter, and any rental's own rules, before unclipping anywhere. Questions from the road can go to info@northlinek9.ca, and we answer them like any other check-in.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Can I board my dog with you while I am away for the winter?

Graduate boarding is $65 + GST per night and is open only to graduates and existing clients. If your dog has not trained with us yet, a program before you leave comes first.

How do I get my dog ready for a long road trip south?

Work on settling in the vehicle, loose-leash walking at busy stops and a reliable place command for rentals. A board and train program before you leave works on all three with daily one-on-one training.

Is graduate boarding just boarding, or does training continue?

Graduates live the same structured routine they learned during their program, with daily exercise, enrichment and individual care. Optional refresher work can be added to the stay.

Can I get training support while I am out of the country for winter?

On-Leash Foundations includes lifetime phone and email support, so questions can reach us wherever you winter. You can also write to info@northlinek9.ca at any point.
