Board & train

Board and train for Samoyeds

A Samoyed pulls because someone, generations ago, asked it to. It barks because it has opinions and a face that gets away with them. And it greets every dog and jogger on the pathway as a long-lost friend. None of that is bad temperament. All of it is hard to live with on a leash. Here is what a live-in program works on for this breed, and what stays yours to manage, coat included.

Pulling by design

Slack on the leash for a dog built to lean into a harness.

Many Samoyeds show up with a lean that starts the moment the leash clips on, a conviction that every passing dog is a friend not yet met, and a running commentary. Daily one-on-one sessions work on loose-leash walking and heel with markers and rewards first, then around everyday distractions: a jogger, a dog across the path, a dropped sandwich. Greetings are earned with a sit, not a lunge. Place is taught as the alternative to the alert bark, and settling is what gets paid.

On-Leash Foundations, two weeks at $1,865 plus GST, is built for dogs who drag and lunge at squirrels, which describes a fair number of Samoyeds; it works on loose-leash walking, heel, sit, down, stay and place, slip lead and collar included. Functional Off-Leash, three weeks at $3,030 plus GST, works on recall around distractions with an Educator remote collar included; for a dog this sociable, the distraction that matters is another dog, and that is what the recall is proofed against.

  • Slack leash past every greeting
  • Sit before saying hello
  • Place instead of the alert bark
  • Recall proofed against other dogs

Coat, heat, homework

The quiet comes home only if you keep paying for it.

Home gets a dog who has practised a slack leash and place daily for weeks, plus a handover lesson covering the markers, the lead and, on the off-leash programs, fitting the Educator collar through a ruff that thick so the contact points reach skin. Barking is the honest exception. A Samoyed paid for noise at home, with attention, a door opened or a voice raised back, tends to pick the habit straight back up, so the handover covers your responses too.

Then the coat. A Samoyed's double coat is insulation in both directions, and many fade fast in summer heat, so practise at the cool ends of the day, keep sessions short and never run a recall drill on hot pavement. Barking that grows louder or more frantic is a reason for a free follow-up, not for shouting over it. The consultation sorts the program, and says so when a smaller one covers the pulling. See the Samoyed training guide for method.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Does board and train work for a Samoyed?

It is built for the parts a Samoyed shares with every strong, friendly dog: loose-leash walking, heel, a sit before greetings, place and recall around distractions, all practised daily one-on-one. Barking depends heavily on what gets rewarded at home, so the handover lesson spends time on you. The consultation says which program fits and whether a smaller one would do.

Which board and train program suits a Samoyed that pulls?

On-Leash Foundations is built for dogs who drag and lunge, and it works on loose-leash walking, heel, sit, down, stay and place around everyday distractions over two weeks at $1,865 plus GST, with lifetime phone and email support afterwards. If recall off leash is the goal as well, Functional Off-Leash covers it with the Educator collar included. The consultation meets your dog before recommending either.

Can board and train stop a Samoyed barking?

A program works on place, settling and manners in a routine where quiet gets paid, and it teaches you what keeps barking alive at home: attention, doors opened on demand, shouting back. It cannot promise silence from a breed this vocal, and we will not pretend otherwise. Barking that escalates after the program is a reason to use a follow-up session and reassess.

Is a Samoyed training program different in summer?

The curriculum is the same, but a double-coated white dog built for cold tends to tire quickly in heat, so your homework should run at the cool ends of the day with water on hand. The handover lesson will show you how the Educator collar sits in that coat if your program includes one. Ask about seasonal timing at the consultation rather than guessing.
