Board & train

Board and train for Rottweilers

A Rottweiler who pulls is not just a nuisance. On a January sidewalk glazed with ice, it is a safety question. Add a breed that often watches the door and sizes up strangers, and the training goal gets clear: a dog that walks politely, settles when guests arrive and carries on past people and dogs. Here is what a live-in program works on for Rottweilers, and how we recommend which one fits.

What we work on

Strength, the front door and neutrality on the sidewalk.

Many Rottweilers arrive strong, smart and a little too invested in managing the household. Common threads include leaning hard into the leash, body-blocking at the front door and staring down passing dogs. A live-in program works on those through daily one-on-one training: loose-leash walking and heel, a place command practised while the doorbell rings, and neutrality, which simply means noticing people and dogs and carrying on.

On-Leash Foundations ($1,865 + GST) is built for dogs who drag and lunge on the leash. Functional Off-Leash and Advanced Off-Leash add recall, distance commands and public manners for owners who want a Rottweiler with them on patios and trails. Behaviour Rehab is built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, including growling, snapping or a bite, and dogs with bite histories are accepted after a full assessment. Our guide to training a Rottweiler covers the method itself.

  • Leash manners on icy sidewalks
  • Place command during doorbell rings
  • Neutrality around strangers and dogs
  • Calm manners on busy patios

Back at home

What carries over once your Rottweiler is home.

The handover lesson puts the leash in your hands and shows you the cues, rewards and tool handling your dog has been practising. That matters with a Rottweiler, because in our experience a strong, confident dog often tests whether the rules still apply with a new person holding the leash. Free follow-up sessions are included, so there is a chance to work through whatever has slipped once the routine moves home.

Your part is steady and unglamorous: keep the place command at the door, keep walks structured, and keep greetings with strangers polite and optional rather than forced. The consultation is where we look at your Rottweiler, your household and your goals, then recommend a program. If Private Training or a smaller program is enough, we will tell you plainly and save you the bigger investment.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Is there a Rottweiler board and train in Calgary?

Yes. Northline K9 runs one-on-one board and train programs for Rottweilers in Calgary and surrounding areas, with no group classes. Which program fits is recommended at the consultation.

What does a Rottweiler training program cost?

Our board and train programs range from $1,865 + GST for On-Leash Foundations to $4,850 to $5,760 + GST for Behaviour Rehab. The right one depends on what your Rottweiler needs, which the consultation works out.

Can board and train help a Rottweiler that guards or growls?

Guarding that has turned into growling, snapping or biting is what Behaviour Rehab is built for, and it starts with a full assessment. Please do not punish the growl, since it is a warning worth keeping. Until then, manage visitors with a leash or barrier.

Will my Rottweiler be trained with a prong collar or e-collar?

Skills are taught with markers and rewards first, and tools are matched to the individual dog. Any slip lead, prong collar or Educator e-collar is introduced properly, and we teach you to use it at the handover.
