Board & train
Board and train for Pomeranians
A Pomeranian is a spitz bred down to lap size that never received the memo about the size. Many of them patrol the front window, bark when the furnace clicks on, and run the house from a height of four feet because that is where they are usually carried. None of this is a character flaw. It is a confident little dog with no job, and a live-in program gives it one.

On four feet
A place by the window and a walk done on the dog's own legs.
Alert barking is the first thing a program takes apart, and it does it with place rather than with a hush. A Pomeranian who has a spot to go to when the doorbell rings or the neighbour's truck starts has something to do other than announce it. Place is taught in Puppy Fundamentals and On-Leash Foundations, and both work around everyday distractions on purpose, so the sound that used to start the barking is practised as a cue to go lie down.
Being carried is the quieter problem. A dog lifted over every puddle and past every other dog never practises walking past them, and often learns that barking from your arms is safe. On-Leash Foundations puts a Pom on the ground for two weeks of loose-leash walking and heel at its own stride, with a slip lead and collar sized for a very small neck to take home. Where the barking is fearful or comes with lunging, the fit is Behaviour Rehab, assessed first.
- Place when the doorbell rings
- Walks on its own four feet
- Quiet at the front window
- Recall with a Micro Educator
What you keep doing
The arms are the habit to break, and the habit is yours.
The hardest part of the handover for a Pom owner is usually the arms. The dog comes home walking nicely and using place, and the first instinct is to scoop it up at the first bark. What transfers is what you keep: the dog walks into the house on a leash, goes to place when the doorbell rings, and is picked up because you chose to, not because it demanded. The handover lesson covers each of those, and the free follow-up session catches whatever slipped.
Bossiness is about who decides, so you keep deciding: the dog waits for a release before the couch, sits before the bowl, and goes to place while you eat instead of supervising from your lap. Where off-leash recall is the goal, Functional Off-Leash includes owner education on the remote collar, and you keep paying every recall. The method is in our Pomeranian training guide. The consultation recommends the program, and if two weeks is all the dog needs, that is what we recommend.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Is a Pomeranian board and train the same program as for a big dog?
Same curriculum, same one-on-one daily training, same structured routine. What changes is the dog: tools are matched to the individual, the walking pace is a Pom's, and the distractions are the ones a small dog meets at ankle height. Nothing is watered down because the dog weighs what a cat does.
Can a board and train for a Pomeranian stop the barking?
A program works on it rather than promising to end it. The dog learns a place command, practises it around the sounds that set it off, and lives a structured routine that leaves less energy for sentry duty. If the barking is fearful or aimed at other dogs on walks, Behaviour Rehab begins with a full assessment, and barking that persists or escalates after training is a reason to reassess with a professional.
Which Pomeranian training program fits a dog who is carried everywhere?
On-Leash Foundations, the two-week program built around loose-leash walking, heel, sit, stay, down and place, is the one that puts a Pom on its own feet. It includes a slip lead and training collar to take home and lifetime phone and email support. For a puppy, Puppy Fundamentals covers leash manners and place with crate comfort and socialization added.
Is there a Pomeranian training program where the dog comes home every night?
Day Training runs Monday to Friday at $650 plus GST per week, with drop-off between 8 and 10 am and pick-up between 5 and 7 pm. It covers one-on-one daily training, manners reinforcement and structured socialization, with a weekly one-hour go-home lesson for you. It suits a Pom who needs consistent work and an owner who wants the dog on the couch each evening, by invitation.
