Board and train for long-haul travellers

Rotations, long-haul routes, crew schedules: some jobs mean the person who started the training is gone for weeks. Meanwhile a partner, a parent or a neighbour is holding the leash, each with slightly different words and rules. Dogs tend to notice. The fix is a dog trained on one clear set of cues, and a household that agrees to use them.

Many handlers, one dog

Training a dog for a rotating cast of handlers.

When three people walk a dog three different ways, the dog often learns that the rules depend on who is holding the leash. During board and train, your dog works daily, one-on-one, on cues taught with markers and rewards first and then proofed in real-world settings. Because the cues are consistent from the start, they are easier to pass on to anyone who learns them properly, whether that is a spouse, a roommate or a sitter.

That is why the handover lesson carries extra weight for a household like yours. Bring the adults who will actually be home while you are away. We teach every one of them the same words, the same leash handling and the same tool use, so nobody improvises. Advanced Off-Leash, four weeks at $3,940 + GST, includes owner education, handover lessons and two free follow-up sessions, which leaves room to book one around your rotation.

  • One word for each cue
  • Same leash handling for everyone
  • Every handler at the handover
  • Real-world proofing before home

The household plan

Who holds the standard while you are gone.

Pick one person at home to own the routine, then write it down: the cue words, feeding and walk times, where the dog settles on place, and which tools are used and how. A note on the fridge or a shared group chat works fine. When the home handler hits a snag, On-Leash Foundations includes lifetime phone and email support, so the question can come to us instead of waiting for your next days off.

Sometimes nobody is home to hold the standard for a stretch. Graduate boarding, at $65 + GST per night for graduates and existing clients, covers those gaps with the same structured routine the dog learned, plus optional refresher work. As simple arithmetic, a 14-night rotation comes to $910 + GST. If manners start drifting between trips, a Private Training session at $150 + GST is a chance to get every handler back on the same page together.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

How do I keep my dog trained when I work away for weeks?

Train the dog on one consistent set of cues, then teach those cues to whoever is at home. The handover lesson is where that happens, and On-Leash Foundations adds lifetime phone and email support for questions in between.

Can my partner come to the handover lesson too?

Yes, bring your partner and any other adult who will handle the dog while you are away. If your schedule makes the date tricky, raise it at the consultation so we can plan around it.

Where can my dog stay when no one is home during my rotation?

Graduate boarding is available at $65 + GST per night for graduates and existing clients. Your dog keeps the structured routine it learned, with optional refresher work.

Does my dog get confused when different people give commands?

Dogs often struggle when each person uses different words or different rules. Agreeing on one cue list and one way of handling the leash tends to help a great deal.
