Board & train
Board and train for Great Pyrenees
A Great Pyrenees was built to spend the night on a hillside deciding, alone, what counts as a threat. Move it to a Calgary bungalow or an acreage and the job description stays; only the hillside changes. Many Pyrs bark through the night, wander if a gate is open, and treat recall as a suggestion. A live-in program works on some of that. The rest is yours to manage, and we say which is which.

Guardian on a leash
Leash manners and household calm for a dog bred to work alone.
Many Great Pyrenees arrive with a deliberate response to cues, a body that leans into a leash with the weight of an adult, and a deep bark that starts at dusk and treats every passing coyote, car or neighbour as business. Daily one-on-one training works on loose-leash walking and heel on a slip lead fitted for a giant, sit, down and stay built with markers and rewards, and place as the default when the doorbell goes. Structured socialization is about calm, not a crowd.
On-Leash Foundations, two weeks at $1,865 plus GST, works on that list and sends the slip lead and training collar home. Puppy Fundamentals, three weeks at $2,775 plus GST, is built for a Pyr pup growing faster than its manners. The off-leash programs work on recall around distractions, and the consultation is candid about what recall can mean for a dog bred to range and decide for itself. Where guarding has tipped into aggression, Behaviour Rehab is built for it and begins with a full assessment.
- Loose leash at a giant's weight
- Down-stay through the doorbell
- Calm past the neighbour's dog
- Candid talk about off leash
What stays yours
Night barking, roaming and the parts no program removes.
The dog comes home having practised a slack leash, a down-stay and place inside a structured routine, and the handover lesson teaches you to ask the way the dog learned. Many Pyrs respond on their own clock, so patience matters at home: a cue given once, a pause, a reward the moment the dog complies. Your free follow-up sessions are the place to bring the specific gate, the specific neighbour and the specific hour of night.
Night barking is the job the breed was made for; a program works on a settled place and a down that holds, not an end to the instinct to answer the dark. Managing it is yours: indoors at night, and a reassessment with a professional if the barking escalates rather than settles. Roaming is a fence question first; no recall replaces a latched gate. The consultation matches the program to your Pyr and recommends the smaller one when that is enough. The Great Pyrenees training guide covers method.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Does board and train work for a Great Pyrenees?
It works on what the job on the hillside never required and a pet home does: loose-leash walking at a giant's weight, down-stay and place through the doorbell, calm passing of other dogs. It does not remove night barking or the urge to patrol, and we say so before you book. Which program, and whether a smaller one covers it, is decided at the consultation.
Can a Great Pyrenees be trained off leash in a board and train?
Functional Off-Leash and Advanced Off-Leash work on recall around distractions, with a remote collar included and taught to you. With a breed bred to range and make its own decisions, the candid conversation at the consultation is whether off leash in open country is a realistic goal for your dog, or whether a reliable leash and a solid fence suit your situation better. At the consultation we match the program to the dog, and we say so when a smaller one will do.
What does a Great Pyrenees training program include?
The fixed parts are daily one-on-one training, a structured routine, socialization and enrichment, updates to you, a handover lesson and free follow-up sessions. For a Pyr, the daily work leans on leash manners, place, down-stay and calm around passing dogs rather than fast, flashy obedience. Puppy Fundamentals adds crate comfort and name recognition for a pup still growing into its feet.
Will board and train stop a Great Pyrenees barking at night?
No program removes a livestock guardian's instinct to answer the dark, and we will not claim otherwise. What a program works on is a settled place, a down that holds and a routine the dog carries home; what you manage is where the dog sleeps and what the barking earns. Barking that escalates instead of settling is a reason to reassess with a professional, not to wait it out.
