How to train a Great Pyrenees
A Great Pyrenees was never bred to take orders. It was bred to sit on a hillside, decide for itself what counts as a threat, and announce the verdict, mostly at night. Training one is less about obedience drills and more about boundaries, management and a relationship the dog respects. Here is what that looks like in an ordinary city household.

Independence is the feature, not the bug.
Everything difficult about a Pyrenees is something a shepherd once paid for. The independence that ignores your recall kept flocks safe without supervision. The barking that wakes your street at 2 am warned off predators. The suspicion of visitors is the guarding itself. This dog is not failing to understand you; it is doing its job in a setting that no longer needs it done.
Day to day, that means a dog that patrols the fence line, barks at sounds you cannot hear, and keeps a quiet file on every stranger. Adolescence adds size fast, and an opinionated puppy becomes a very large opinion. Off leash in open space, a Pyrenees drifts outward and keeps going. The famous recall failure is genetic; it is not a training gap you can fully close.

We teach the skills a Pyrenees will actually use: walking politely on leash despite its strength, settling on a place cot while guests arrive, pausing at thresholds, and coming when called in fenced, low-stakes settings. Markers and rewards work here; nagging repetition does not, because this breed stops answering requests it finds pointless. Short sessions, real-life rewards, and boundaries the dog experiences as fair.
The big mistakes are expecting retriever-style recall and punishing the barking as defiance. Manage both: secure fencing, a long line in open country, and an indoor overnight routine so the dog is not on duty at the window. Calgary winters suit the breed; that coat was built for cold, and yours will happily lie in snow while you shiver. No, if easy means fast, eager compliance. Yes, if you measure the right things: they learn house manners, leash skills and boundaries well when training respects their independence. Expect a thinking partner, not a performer.
What are the usual Great Pyrenees behaviour problems?
Nocturnal barking, ignoring recall, wandering when a fence fails, and standoffishness with strangers. Each one is guardian behaviour with nowhere to go, not disobedience. Management plus clear house rules brings all of them down to livable levels.
