How to train a Akita
An Akita does not perform for strangers, work for praise alone, or want forty dog friends. It is dignified, reserved and fiercely loyal to its own household, with strong opinions about other dogs. Trained early and led clearly, it is a magnificent companion. Trained late or led vaguely, it makes its own decisions, and they are rarely the ones you wanted.

Know the dog

Akitas were kept as guardians and hunters in Japan, and the temperament still says so: composed, watchful, selective about company. Affection at home is real and quiet; enthusiasm for strangers is not on the menu. This is a breed that reads a room, decides who matters, and politely files the rest. Expecting golden-retriever sociability from an Akita sets everyone up to fail, including the dog.
Dog selectivity is the trait that catches owners out. An Akita puppy may play happily with everyone, then hit maturity and stop tolerating rude dogs, same-sex dogs, or any dogs at all. Add protectiveness of home and family, plus a stoicism that hides discomfort, and you get a breed where prevention beats correction. The window for shaping social judgment opens early, and it does not reopen wide.

How we train
Structure early, socialize on purpose.
Start young and be deliberate. We socialize Akitas one calm dog and one controlled setting at a time, building neutrality rather than friendships. Structure carries the rest: freedom is earned through calm behaviour, the dog waits at doors, walks on a loose leash and holds a place command while life happens around it. Markers and rewards teach the skills; fair, consistent rules make them stick, because this breed respects consistency far more than repetition.
The fastest ways to go wrong are the dog park, which teaches an Akita that other dogs mean chaos, and letting adolescent defiance slide until it hardens into policy. Calgary's deep winters are this breed's favourite season; the double coat means your dog will want longer outings exactly when you want shorter ones, so plan for that. Are Akitas easy to train?
They are intelligent and learn quickly, but they are not eager to please, so motivation has to make sense to the dog. Repetitive drilling gets you ignored. With short sessions, real rewards and consistent rules, an Akita trains well; it just refuses to be nagged.
What are common Akita behaviour problems?
Dog selectivity and same-sex scraps at maturity, guarding of food or family, and a flat refusal to obey cues the dog sees no point in. Most serious problems trace back to skipped early socialization or vague household rules. Caught early, nearly all of it is workable.
What does good Akita puppy training look like?
Prioritise socialization before anything impressive: calm exposure to people, handling, surfaces and well-mannered dogs while the puppy is still open to it. Add crate comfort, name response and leash basics. The obedience can come later; the social window cannot.
Any Akita training tips for other dogs?
A successful Akita ignores other dogs; it does not need to like them. Keep greetings on leash brief or skip them entirely, and choose calm, known dogs for any social time. Manage distance before your dog has to make the decision.
