Board and train for grandparents' dogs
A dog that jumps is a nuisance for a thirty-year-old and a fall risk for someone with tender knees. Add grandchildren who squeal at the door and a leash that yanks on black ice, and a friendly dog becomes a worry. This page covers what a program works on for an older owner, how family fits in, and when coaching at home is kinder.

Safer visits, steadier walks
Manners for grandchildren's visits and icy sidewalks.
On-Leash Foundations works on loose-leash walking, heel, sit and stay, and a place command around everyday distractions. For an older handler, each piece has a job. A dog who walks without pulling is easier to hold on a frozen sidewalk. A place command gives the dog a spot to settle when the grandchildren tumble in, so the greeting has a chance of happening on four paws. Management comes first: a gate or leash during arrivals.
As general safety advice rather than a program rule, it helps to keep grandchildren out of the practising: they sit at the table while an adult handles the dog on leash, and nobody small is asked to try the cues. At the handover lesson we teach the owner the cues and the tools, and it is worth asking at the consultation whether the family member who helps with walks can be there too. The slip lead and training collar go home with the dog.
- No jumping on visitors
- Settles on place during visits
- Loose leash on icy paths
- Calm at the front door
The gentler route
Why private coaching can suit an owner who is home.
Board and train means weeks apart from the dog, and for someone whose dog is their daily company, that can feel like a lot. Private Training is the alternative: a one-hour session at $150 + GST, with a written plan to practise all week. A retired owner often has something working owners lack, which is time for short practice sessions every morning and afternoon.
Coaching asks more of the handler's body, though. If the pulling is strong or balance is a concern, it may be wiser to let a trainer work the leash skills first and teach the owner afterward. We will say which way we lean at the consultation, and if coaching at home covers it, that is what we will recommend. Your doctor is the right person to ask about what is physically safe for you.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Can board and train stop my dog jumping on my grandkids?
Programs work on sit, place and calm greetings, but we never promise a result. As general safety advice, keep the dog leashed or behind a gate when children arrive, and let the adults do the practising.
What is the best leash for an older person walking a dog that pulls?
There is no single answer, because the tool is matched to the dog and the handler. Board and train programs send a slip lead and training collar home, and the handover lesson covers how to hold and use them.
Can my daughter come to the handover lesson?
Ask at the consultation. A family member who walks the dog benefits from hearing the same cues and rules as the owner.
Is Day Training an option for a grandparent's dog?
Day Training runs Monday to Friday at $650 + GST a week, with drop-off from 8 to 10 am and pick-up from 5 to 7 pm. The daily drives are worth weighing in winter, and the consultation can compare it with private sessions.
