Board & train

Board and train for Goldendoodles

Goldendoodles arrive with a Golden Retriever's urge to greet everyone and a Poodle's talent for learning things fast, including things nobody meant to teach. Many of them are bouncy, sociable, and more sensitive than the goofy exterior suggests. A live-in program gives that combination a routine to settle into. This page covers what the program works on for the breed and what comes home with the dog. For method, read our Goldendoodle training guide.

Bounce meets brains

Where the bounce, the pull and the brain get daily work.

Start with the greeting, because for many Goldendoodles it is the habit that bothers guests most. The retriever half wants to be touching you; the poodle half has often worked out that paws on a chest get a reaction. In a live-in program the dog practises a sit or a place while people arrive, again and again, with a marker and a reward for keeping four feet down. Place command is a listed skill in both Puppy Fundamentals and On-Leash Foundations.

Then the walk. A Goldendoodle's pull is rarely rude; it is usually enthusiasm with a heading, a person or a dog, sometimes with a sock carried proudly along. On-Leash Foundations, two weeks at $1,865 plus GST, is built for the walk that has become a tow, and works on loose-leash walking, heel and everyday distractions. Functional Off-Leash, three weeks at $3,030 plus GST, adds recall around distractions for a doodle whose manners are already decent, with an Educator remote collar included.

Home and after

The handover lesson, the follow-up, and the rule you keep enforcing.

The dog comes home with a handover lesson, a slip lead and training collar from the puppy and leash programs, and a free follow-up session, within 60 days for Puppy Fundamentals. During the stay you get updates rather than visits, since a visit tends to interrupt a doodle who has just settled into the routine. The lesson is where the greeting rule, the leash position and the place cue are handed to you, because many Goldendoodles check whether the rules travelled.

Your part is consistency with a dog who notices everything. Hold the four-feet rule with every visitor, including the ones who say they do not mind. Keep the leash standard on short walks too. Go easy on volume: many doodles wilt under a sharp tone and work beautifully for a clear marker and a calm word. The consultation is where the program gets chosen, and when a shorter stay covers your dog's habits, that is the recommendation.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Is board and train good for a Goldendoodle?

It tends to suit the breed's mix well: a clever, sociable dog gets a structured daily routine and one-on-one practice at the greeting and leash habits that are hard to rehearse at home. Sensitivity is accounted for, with skills taught through markers and rewards first. The consultation confirms whether a program fits your particular dog.

What does a Goldendoodle board and train work on?

Greeting with four feet on the floor, loose-leash walking past people and dogs, a place cue that holds while guests come in, and name recognition that cuts through excitement. Puppies also work on crate comfort and meeting new sights and sounds calmly. The exact list is set after the consultation.

Which Goldendoodle training program fits a puppy versus an adult?

Puppy Fundamentals is the puppy program, three weeks at $2,775 plus GST, for pups in their key learning window. On-Leash Foundations, two weeks at $1,865 plus GST, is built for an adult who drags on the leash. Functional Off-Leash is for a doodle with decent manners who is ready for recall work.

Do mini Goldendoodles need a different board and train than standards?

The curriculum is the same, and tools are matched to the individual dog, which includes its size and strength. Bounce is bounce at any size. A mini with paws on a knee is practising the same habit as a standard with paws on a chest.
