How to train a Goldendoodle
Goldendoodles are easy to love and easy to undertrain. They are people-loving, bouncy, and quick to pick up anything you bother to teach, which convinces owners the manners will sort themselves out. They do not. Jumping and mouthing outlast puppyhood wherever structure is missing, and a bouncy adolescent is a lot more dog than a bouncy puppy. Here is what actually fits the breed.

Living with one
The bounce is not a phase.
A Goldendoodle wants to be touching somebody at all times, preferably with its front paws. That people-love is genuine and it is also the root of the classic complaints: jumping on guests, mouthing hands and sleeves, whining the moment the household leaves. In a condo, that whining becomes a neighbour problem fast. None of this is defiance. It is a social dog with big feelings and no instructions.
The trap is adolescence. Because these dogs are fast, happy learners, the puppy months feel effortless, so owners coast. Then the adolescent is still greeting people with paws and teeth, except now it can reach the counter. Add the coat: without early, deliberate handling practice, brushing and grooming appointments turn into wrestling matches. Jumping, mouthing and grooming drama are the three things we are most often called to fix.

Training that fits
Reward the calm, not the party.
Goldendoodles learn quickly with markers and food, so skills come easily: sit, down, place and loose-leash walking can all be solid before the first birthday. The work is in the greetings. Teach that four paws on the floor is the only position that earns attention, and enforce it with every visitor, every time. Place is your best friend here: a dog on a mat cannot rehearse jumping. Handle paws, ears and coat daily so grooming stays boring.
The most common mistake we see is meeting excitement with excitement, then wondering why the dog escalates. Calm handler, calm dog. In Calgary, Goldendoodles are the breed we meet most in consults, usually from the newer suburbs, and the story is nearly always the same: great dog, no structure. Are Goldendoodles easy to train?
Yes, in the sense that they learn fast and love working for food and praise. The catch is that they learn bad habits just as fast, and jumping and mouthing stick around without consistent structure. Easy to teach is not the same as automatically well behaved.
What are the most common Goldendoodle behaviour problems?
Jumping on people, mouthing hands, and whining when left alone, especially in condos and apartments. All three are social behaviours from a dog bred to be near people. Structure and clear greeting rules resolve most of it.
When should Goldendoodle puppy training start?
The day the puppy comes home. Teach name, sit, crate comfort and calm handling of paws and coat before adolescence arrives. Early grooming practice matters as much as obedience for this breed.
What are your best Goldendoodle training tips?
Reward calm more than you reward enthusiasm, make four-on-the-floor the price of attention, and practise brief alone time daily so separation whining never takes root. Keep sessions short; this breed's attention is quick but not endless.
