Board & train
Board and train for Dachshunds
A Dachshund was bred to go down a badger hole alone and make its own decisions, and that history still shows up on the couch. It reads as a big dog in a small body: the deep bark at the window, the refusal to come in off a scent, the opinion about every cue. A live-in program gives that independence a structure to live inside, then hands the structure to you.

Inside the program
A small hound with a loud opinion needs structure before obedience.
Many Dachshunds arrive with the same short list: barking at the window and the door, a leash that goes tight the moment a scent crosses the path, and house-training that never quite finished. The daily routine in a board and train works on all three at once. Place teaches the dog to settle on a bed while the world goes by. Leash manners teach walking past a smell without dragging. Crate comfort and a fixed schedule are the base of the house-training work.
Program fit depends on the dog. Puppy Fundamentals covers crate comfort, name, sit, down, place and calm exposure to new sights and sounds for a young doxie. On-Leash Foundations is built for the adult who drags toward every smell. If the barking has become lunging at strangers or other dogs, Behaviour Rehab starts with a full assessment and works at the dog's pace. Back care sits over all of it: tell us what your vet has said about jumping and stairs.
- Window and door barking
- Leash pulling toward scent
- House-training routine and crate comfort
- Vet guidance on jumping and stairs
Back at home
What a Dachshund keeps depends on what the house keeps doing.
At the handover lesson you learn the markers, the place command and the leash work the dog has been living with. On Puppy Fundamentals and On-Leash Foundations, the slip lead and training collar come home too. Then the work shifts to you: the same bed, the same calm release from the crate, the same walk past the neighbour's cat without a lunge. A Dachshund tests whether the rules changed in the car. Keep them identical so there is nothing to test.
Three things stay yours for life. Managing the back: ramps, lifting and whatever limits your vet has set. Managing the view: a dog who cannot see the sidewalk has less to announce. And the follow-up sessions every board and train includes, where the first weeks home get reviewed. The method lives in our Dachshund training guide; here the question is fit. Describe the dog at the consultation and we will recommend the program that matches, and say so if a smaller one would do.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Is board and train a good fit for a Dachshund?
It fits when the problems are daily and the owner wants the foundation built by a professional, then handed over. Barking, leash pulling and an unfinished house-training routine are exactly what the live-in schedule works on. The consultation is where we say whether a live-in program or private sessions make more sense for your dog.
What does a Dachshund board and train program work on?
Place, leash manners, crate comfort and a settled response to the sights and sounds that usually set off the bark. For a puppy that includes name recognition and early socialization. For a reactive adult, Behaviour Rehab begins with a full assessment and works at the dog's pace.
Can a board and train program help a Dachshund with house-training?
House-training is a routine problem more than an obedience problem, and the structured routine in a board and train is built around predictable timing. Crate comfort is part of the curriculum, and the welcome package includes a crate-training guide. The schedule has to continue at home, which is what the handover lesson covers.
How does a Dachshund training program handle the dog's back?
Your vet sets the limits, and you bring them to the consultation so the plan accounts for them. Place, leash work and crate comfort are floor-level skills, so the curriculum itself does not depend on jumping. If you are unsure what your dog's back can handle, ask your vet before the program starts.
