Board and train before a wedding

Weddings bring relatives on the pull-out couch, caterers at the door, florist boxes in the hallway and a dog who has never met any of it at once. Some couples want the dog in the photos. Others simply want a dog who settles while the house fills up. Both goals are trainable, and the timing matters as much as the skills.

Guests, photos, chaos

What a dog needs for a full house and a photo line.

The skill doing the heaviest lifting is place: a bed or mat the dog holds while people come and go, garment bags get carried past and the doorbell rings again. Sit and stay at the door keeps greetings off good clothes. Loose-leash walking and heel matter if your dog will stand for portraits, because a dog straining toward the photographer ruins more frames than any blinking guest.

Complete On-Leash Foundations works on place, sit, stay, down, heel and everyday distractions over two weeks. Advanced Off-Leash adds public manners and distance commands for couples who want the dog loose at an outdoor venue, where the venue allows it. If your dog is worried by strangers rather than just excited, tell us at the consultation, since that often calls for an assessment instead of a manners program.

Working backwards

Land the handover before the showers and fittings start.

Wedding months fill fast: showers, fittings, the rehearsal, out-of-town family arriving. Aim for the handover lesson, and some quiet days at home after it, to fall before that stretch rather than inside it. The handover is where you learn the cues and handling your dog has been practising, and you need calm days to run them in your own house before the visitors start testing them.

As plain arithmetic: a two-week program plus a stretch of calm practice at home means starting well ahead of the busy month, and a four-week program means starting earlier still. Ask at the consultation whether your free follow-up session can sit closer to the date as a check-in. Over the weekend itself, graduate boarding at $65 + GST per night keeps your dog in a structured routine, with optional refresher work, while you are at the venue.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Should I send my dog to training before my wedding?

If your dog's manners would make a crowded house or a photo session stressful, a program can work on those skills ahead of time. The consultation looks at the dog and the date, and recommends a smaller program when that covers it.

How far before the wedding should board and train finish?

Leave room after the handover for calm practice at home before the busy month begins. Program lengths are published, from two weeks for On-Leash Foundations to four for Advanced Off-Leash, so count back from there.

Can my dog stay with you over the wedding weekend?

Yes, if your dog is a graduate or an existing client. Graduate boarding is $65 + GST per night, with optional refresher work.

Can you train my dog to walk down the aisle?

There is no aisle-specific program, but heel, sit, stay and public manners are the skills an aisle walk draws on. Advanced Off-Leash works on public manners, and a calm adult handler should hold the leash on the day.
