Behaviour Rehab

Behaviour Rehab for rescue dogs

A rescue arrives with a file: a foster's notes, a shelter's behaviour summary, sometimes a single line about being good with kids. That record is useful, and so is what you have noticed since the dog came home. We suggest bringing both to the full assessment, which is where Behaviour Rehab's five to six weeks of daily individualized work get planned around the dog in front of us.

Records and observations

Bring the file and your own notes; safety concerns do not wait.

Adoption paperwork tells us how the dog behaved in one setting, and your observations tell us how it behaves in yours. Both matter. Helpful things to note before the consultation: what the dog does when a stranger reaches toward it, how it reacts to other dogs, whether it guards food or a bed, where it goes when the household gets loud, and how long it takes to settle afterward. Dates help, because behaviour can shift over the first weeks at home.

None of that is a waiting period. If there has been a bite or a snap, or anyone in the house feels unsafe, book now and keep children apart from the dog in the meantime; dogs with a bite history are accepted into Behaviour Rehab after a full assessment. That assessment is where five weeks or six gets decided and the price within $4,850 to $5,760 plus GST is set. Before it, the consultation recommends a program, and a smaller one when that is enough.

Honest limits

What the program works on, and what it leaves alone.

Behaviour Rehab works on a full behaviour assessment, reactivity work, anxiety rehabilitation, fear-based behaviour work, confidence building and structured socialization, all one-on-one with no group classes. Why a rescue behaves as it does is often unknown; a past may include rough handling, little handling, or a lot of change, and we do not assume abuse explains what we see. The work is aimed at the behaviour in front of us. In-depth owner education and two free follow-up sessions are included.

Some things the program does not do. It does not train service dogs. It does not promise a particular result; it offers daily individualized work built from the assessment. It does not include visits: they are gently discouraged, and you get social-media updates plus personal phone or email check-ins instead, while the dog lives the structured routine it is learning in clean, comfortable accommodation. And if your rescue's behaviour changed suddenly, a vet conversation comes before a training plan.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Is behaviour rehab right for a rescue dog?

It is built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, whatever the dog's background, and it is planned and priced after a full assessment. The consultation is where the recommendation happens, including a smaller program when that is enough.

What does a rescue dog rehabilitation program include?

Behaviour Rehab includes a full behaviour assessment, five to six weeks of daily individualized work on reactivity, anxiety, fear-based behaviour and confidence, structured socialization, in-depth owner education and two free follow-up sessions. It runs $4,850 to $5,760 plus GST, customized to the dog after the assessment.

Can a fearful rescue cope with board and train?

That is a question the assessment answers for the individual dog rather than one we answer in general. What the program provides is daily one-on-one work with no group classes, a structured routine, and clean, comfortable accommodation with fresh water, enrichment and individual care. Visits are gently discouraged, with social-media updates and personal phone or email check-ins instead.

How soon after adopting should I book a consultation?

Whenever you have a concern; there is no required settling period. If there has been a bite, a snap or anyone feels unsafe, book right away rather than waiting for the dog to settle. Otherwise, bring the adoption records and whatever notes you have, however short; the consultation works with what you have seen so far.

Tell us their story.

Bring what the rescue told you and what you have seen since. Book a consultation and we will size the program honestly.
