Puppy house training and board and train

House training is less about the puppy being clever and more about the schedule being boring. Out after waking, after meals, after play and before bed. In a structured program the puppy lives that schedule every day. The harder part comes later, when the puppy walks back into a house with different doors, different floors and people who sleep in on Saturdays.

What comes home

Which toilet habits transfer and which need rebuilding.

A routine transfers better than a location. The puppy comes home used to going out at predictable times, settling in a crate and eating on a schedule. What does not transfer automatically is your back door, your yard and your rug. To the puppy, your home is a new place, so plan to teach where the toilet spot is again, even when the timing already feels familiar.

From the first evening home, copy the schedule from the handover lesson rather than inventing a new one. Take the puppy out on leash to one spot, wait quietly, then mark and reward when it goes. Keep the crate routine described in the welcome package's crate-training guide. Freedom in the house grows as clean days add up, not because the program has ended.

  • Same outing times as program
  • One toilet spot, on leash
  • Crate routine kept from day one
  • House freedom earned gradually

Snow, cold, accidents

Calgary winters, small bladders and when to call the vet.

A Calgary cold snap tests every house-training plan. Small puppies may balk at deep snow or icy steps, and a puppy who refuses to go outside will eventually go inside. Shovel a small patch near the door so the toilet spot stays reachable. Keep winter outings short and purposeful, then come straight back in, and never delay a toilet trip to wait for a warmer moment.

Some accidents are not training problems. If a puppy who had been doing well starts having frequent accidents, strains, drinks much more than usual or seems uncomfortable, call your veterinarian before changing the training plan. Discomfort can look a lot like forgetting. Vaccination timing for outdoor spaces is also your vet's call. Once medical causes are checked, a Private Training session can help troubleshoot the routine.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Will my puppy be house trained after board and train?

A program can set up a consistent toilet routine, but we cannot promise a fully house-trained puppy. The habit holds when the family keeps the same schedule, the same spot and the same supervision at home.

Why is my puppy having accidents after coming home from training?

A new environment means the puppy has to learn where the toilet spot is in your house. Go back to frequent, supervised outings and less free roaming. If accidents keep happening or the puppy seems uncomfortable, see your vet.

How do I potty train a puppy in a Calgary winter?

Clear a small patch close to the door, keep outings short and on leash, and reward right away so the puppy is not left lingering in the cold. Do not delay trips outside to wait for better weather.

Does crate training help with house training?

Crate comfort is part of Puppy Fundamentals, and many puppies avoid soiling a well-sized resting space. Used for rest and never as punishment, a crate makes the schedule easier to keep.
