Ages & stages

Is 5 years old too late to train a dog?

Five is a funny age for a dog. Settled enough that you know who they are, young enough that there are plenty of good years ahead. The habits you live with, the pulling, the door rushing, the selective hearing, have been practiced for a long time. That makes them sturdy, not permanent. Adult dogs often bring a focus that puppies simply lack.

Older habits, same brain

Why a grown dog can still change course.

An adult dog learns the same way it did at a year old: behaviour that pays off gets repeated. What differs is history. A five-year-old who has pulled on every walk has had a great many repetitions of pulling working, at least sometimes. Replacing that takes clear criteria, consistent handling from everyone at home, and enough practice of the new pattern to compete with the old one.

Adult dogs also have advantages. Many settle faster into a session, cope with longer training stretches and are past the adolescent wobble. Before starting, consider anything that has changed recently. A dog who has newly started growling, avoiding stairs or snapping when touched should see a vet first, because discomfort can look like a training problem and deserves to be ruled out by a professional.

  • Vet check for any new behaviour
  • One set of household rules
  • Pick the habit that costs most
  • Practise the replacement daily

Choosing the format

Where an adult dog's training effort pays off.

Prioritize the behaviour that shapes your day: walks, greetings at the door, or coming when called. Leave polish, such as tricks or distance work, for later. For a dog who drags on leash, On-Leash Foundations is a 2-week board and train that works on loose-leash walking, heel and place around everyday distractions, and includes lifetime phone and email support for the owner afterwards.

If the issue is fear, reactivity or aggression, management and safety come first, and Behaviour Rehab begins with a full assessment, including for dogs with a bite history. Owners who want to do the work themselves can use Private Training for a plan they practise all week. The consultation settles the program, including recommending a smaller one when that covers it.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Can a 5 year old dog learn new tricks?

Yes. Adult dogs keep learning throughout life, and many enjoy the structure of new skills. Short, rewarding sessions tend to suit them well.

How do you break bad habits in a 5 year old dog?

Prevent the old habit where you can, teach a specific replacement behaviour, and reward it consistently. Everyone at home needs to follow the same rules so the dog is not getting mixed messages.

Is my older dog's behaviour change a training problem?

Not always. Sudden changes, such as new growling, stiffness or sensitivity to touch, are a reason to see a vet before training. Never punish growling, since it is useful communication.

Is board and train suitable for an adult dog?

Board and train is not limited to puppies, and every program is one-on-one and built around the individual dog. The consultation looks at your dog's history and goals before recommending anything.
