Board & train

Does board and train help with thunderstorm and fireworks fear?

Nobody can book a thunderstorm. That is the awkward truth about sending a noise-fearful dog away to train: the trigger either shows up during the stay or it does not, and your basement during a summer storm is the only place that counts anyway. Here is where a structured program genuinely helps, where it does not, why your vet belongs in the conversation, and how to think about Stampede.

Structure versus sound

Routine can be trained; thunder cannot be scheduled.

No published program lists noise desensitization, and we would rather say that than pretend. What Behaviour Rehab does list is anxiety rehabilitation, confidence building and a full behaviour assessment, which matters when storm panic is one piece of a generally anxious dog. Puppy Fundamentals includes new sights and sounds, calmly, plus crate comfort. For a dog whose only problem is the sky, the consultation may well point to a plan you run at home with coaching rather than weeks away.

What a live-in program can offer a noise-fearful dog is steadiness in general: a predictable day, a settle on place, enrichment, and confidence work at the dog's pace. What it cannot do is make a storm arrive on cue, and it cannot teach your dog what your house sounds like when hail hits the skylight or the fireworks start up. That conditioning happens at home, or it does not happen.

  • Routine and settle, not sound rehearsal
  • Anxiety assessed before any stay
  • Vet conversation before booking
  • Home is where conditioning happens

Timing and homework

Your living room is the only venue that counts.

The owner's job is the part no program can hold: the safe spot in the quietest room, the leash on before the door opens on a fireworks night, and the sound work at low volume on ordinary evenings. Talk to your vet early; what they can offer a panicking dog is their call, not ours. Stampede matters because you can see it coming. Fireworks on a known date reward a plan that started well before, at home, with the dog calm.

At the consultation, describe what the dog does at the first rumble and whether fear shows up anywhere else, since that separates a noise problem from an anxiety problem. Ask plainly whether a live-in program adds anything for your dog. If the fear is noise-only, a smaller option such as Private Training may be all that gets recommended. A stay that overlaps Stampede only means the dog is elsewhere for those nights; it trains nothing about your living room.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Does board and train fix thunderstorm and fireworks fear?

Not on its own, and we will not pretend otherwise. Noise fear is managed and conditioned where the dog actually hears the noise, which is your home, so the useful part of any program is what you learn to run there. The method is in our thunderstorm and fireworks guide.

Which thunderstorm and fireworks fear training program is the right one to look at?

If the noise fear is one piece of a generally anxious dog, Behaviour Rehab covers anxiety rehabilitation and confidence building after a full assessment. If the dog is fine except during storms and fireworks, Private Training, $150 plus GST per one-hour session with a written weekly plan, is the program built for coached work at home. The consultation makes the call.

Should the vet be consulted before booking training for thunderstorm fear?

Yes, and before rather than after. A dog that panics at noise may need more than training, and what your vet can offer is their area, not ours. Training and veterinary care work alongside each other on this one.

Is it a good idea to send a dog to board and train during Stampede?

Think of it as a scheduling question, not a training one. A dog away from home during the fireworks is simply not at home for them, which leaves your plan for next year untested. The better use of Stampede's predictable timing is a home plan that is already running before the first night.
