Board & train

Does board and train help with resource guarding?

Yes, board and train can play a part, but resource guarding starts with a full assessment, not an obedience course. A dog that stiffens over a bowl or a bone is not being rude. It is often worried about losing something, and worry does not answer to a heel command. The first question is who could get hurt before anything changes. Safety answer first, program answer second.

Behaviour, not manners

What Behaviour Rehab works on when the trigger is a bowl.

Resource guarding isn't part of any obedience curriculum. The manners programs list leash skills, recall and off-leash manners, and a dog who freezes over a chew is showing something those lists do not address. Behaviour Rehab starts with a full behaviour assessment and then works on anxiety, fear-based behaviour, confidence building and structured socialization, with the plan and the price set after that assessment. Dogs with bite histories are accepted once the assessment is done, and two free follow-ups are included.

What the stay cannot change is the kitchen the dog goes back to. Who walks past the bowl, whether a child can reach the chew, and how a second dog is fed are decisions made at home, every day, long after the handover lesson. That is why the in-depth owner education matters here: in Behaviour Rehab you learn the why, not just the what, so the household can carry the management on its own.

  • Full assessment before pricing
  • Bite histories discussed openly
  • Owner education runs deep
  • Your kitchen stays your call

Risk before training

The first homework is management, and the first question is risk.

Before any training, the setup has to be safe: meals in a quiet spot nobody walks past, chews offered only when the dog can be left alone with them, and children kept separated from the dog around food and chews. A growl is information, and punishing it tends to remove the warning rather than the worry. Learning to read the freeze that often comes first is part of the owner education. The method is in our guide on how to stop resource guarding.

At the consultation, expect questions about risk before questions about training: what is guarded, from whom, how close someone can get, whether teeth have ever made contact, and who else lives in the house. Bring any bite history plainly; it is discussed, not disqualifying. Private Training, $150 plus GST per one-hour session with a written plan for your home, covers behaviour troubleshooting, and Which program fits is settled at the consultation, and a smaller one is recommended whenever it covers the goal.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Does board and train fix resource guarding?

Nothing about guarding comes with a promise. Behaviour Rehab works on fear-based behaviour and confidence building after a full assessment, and the home has to carry the management afterwards. That is what the in-depth owner education is for.

Is resource guarding a Behaviour Rehab case or a regular board and train?

Behaviour Rehab is the program built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, with a full assessment, fear-based behaviour work and confidence building, and it accepts bite histories after that assessment. The obedience programs list manners and off-leash skills instead. Behaviour Rehab runs five to six weeks at $4,850 to $5,760 plus GST, and the consultation recommends the program.

Can resource guarding be worked on without a board and train stay?

Sometimes. Private Training at $150 plus GST per one-hour session works on behaviour troubleshooting and owner education with a written plan for your home. Whether that is enough, or a stay is the safer starting point, is decided at the consultation after we hear who is at risk, and a sudden change in guarding is a reason to see your vet first.

Should growling over food be punished before board and train?

No. The growl is the warning that keeps hands safe, and correcting it often teaches a dog to go quiet without feeling any better. Manage the situation instead, keep children separated from the dog around food, and bring the details to the consultation.

Growling over the bowl?

Book a consultation and tell us what is guarded and from whom. Assessment first, then a plan, and the smaller route if it fits.
