Board & train
Does board and train help with howling?
Howling is two problems wearing the same sound. One dog howls when you pick up the phone, because noise has reliably bought company; another starts up after the door closes and keeps going, because being alone is genuinely hard. A live-in program can do real work for the first dog and nothing useful for the second until a full assessment has said what is going on. That sorting comes before any talk of programs.

Two howls
Routine and settle skills for one howl, an assessment for the other.
For the attention howler, the published curricula have more to offer than their headings suggest. Puppy Fundamentals spends three weeks ($2,775 + GST) on crate comfort, place, down and stay, and taking new sights and sounds calmly. On-Leash Foundations adds stay, place and everyday distractions over two weeks for $1,865 + GST. A board and train puts the dog inside a structured routine with daily exercise and enrichment, which is the opposite of the long, empty afternoon that many howlers are commenting on.
Now the other howl. If the noise starts after the door closes, keeps going, and a camera shows a dog who cannot settle, no obedience curriculum answers that. A live-in program can build settle skills; it cannot diagnose distress. Behaviour Rehab, five to six weeks at $4,850 to $5,760 + GST, begins with a full assessment and works on anxiety rehabilitation at the dog's pace, with in-depth owner education. A sudden change in an otherwise quiet dog is a vet visit first.
- Routine and place for the attention howl
- Alone-time distress gets assessed first
- Camera footage before any booking
- Sudden change means vet first
Home and alone
Your schedule is the part no program can rehearse for you.
The structured routine a dog lives during a board and train is what you inherit at the handover lesson, and the howling question is whether your week can hold it. Predictable exercise, a place or crate the dog settles in, and attention that arrives once needs are met and the dog is quiet, not while it is loud: those are yours to run from day one. Our guide How to stop a dog howling carries the method; this page asks whether a program fits.
At the consultation, say when the howling happens and who is home when it does; if you have footage of the dog alone, bring it. Ask whether the recommended program includes crate comfort or place, since those are the settle skills you will lean on, and ask what the follow-up session should be saved for. The recommendation comes out of the consultation, and when a smaller program does the job, that is the recommendation.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Does board and train fix howling?
It depends on which howl you have. For a dog that howls for attention or out of boredom, a live-in program works on settle skills and a structured routine, and the handover lesson teaches you to keep both going. For a dog that howls only when alone and cannot settle, a full assessment comes first, and that is where Behaviour Rehab begins.
Is there a howling training program for a dog that howls when left alone?
Not an obedience one. Howling that starts when the door closes and does not stop may be distress, and that needs a professional assessment rather than a stay command. Behaviour Rehab is built for anxiety, fear and reactivity, runs five to six weeks at $4,850 to $5,760 + GST, and is customized after the assessment.
Can board and train stop a dog howling at sirens?
Siren howling is a dog answering a sound, and no program stops the sirens. A live-in program works on taking new sounds calmly and on a place or down-stay, which gives you something to cue when the fire truck goes by. Our guide How to stop a dog howling covers the method; Private Training, $150 + GST a session, is built for owners who want to run it themselves with a written plan.
Will the howling come back after board and train?
It may temporarily increase when it stops being paid, and that is not failure. What the plan relies on is the routine you took over at the handover lesson and attention arriving when the dog is quiet. If it persists or escalates, or the dog seems distressed, reassess with a professional rather than waiting it out.
