Board & train

Does board and train help with growling when moved off furniture?

A dog who growls when you move it off the couch is telling you something about that spot and about being handled. Dragging it off by the collar answers the growl with a confrontation, which is one way a growl turns into a snap. A board and train can build the two skills that remove the confrontation, but the guarding itself needs an assessment first. Here is where a program fits, and where it does not.

Curriculum fit

Place and off are the trained alternatives, and the growl itself is assessed.

Three published offerings meet this problem from different angles. Behaviour Rehab, five to six weeks at $4,850 to $5,760 plus GST, opens with a full behaviour assessment and works on fear-based behaviour, confidence building and structured socialization; dogs with bite histories are accepted into it after that assessment. Puppy Fundamentals and On-Leash Foundations both teach the place command, which gives the dog a resting spot of its own that is not your sofa. Private Training, $150 plus GST per hour, covers behaviour troubleshooting with a plan written for your home.

What a live-in program can change is fluency: a dog who goes to place on one cue and gets off furniture on another, practised daily away from your sofa. What it cannot change is your living room. Couch rules, and how each adult asks the dog down, are set at home, and the growl tends to return wherever the collar grab does. A dog who has snapped, or who began growling suddenly, needs a vet check and a professional assessment before anyone trains anything.

  • Place cue, a spot of its own
  • Off cue, no collar grab
  • Full assessment before rehab
  • Vet check if growling is new

After handover

You take over the cues, the house rules and the no-grab agreement.

At the handover lesson you learn the exact words and hand signals the dog has been working to, where its place bed should live in your home, and how to ask for off without touching the collar. Children never move the dog off furniture, and nobody pokes at the growl to see whether it has gone. The welcome package includes a crate-training guide, and a crate or place bed gives the dog a legitimate spot to rest when the sofa is closed.

Bring the history to the consultation: whether the dog has ever snapped or made contact, which pieces of furniture set it off, whether it also guards food or toys, and what happens now when someone reaches for it. Ask how off is taught without confrontation, what the assessment looks for, and what the free follow-ups cover. Then expect a straight recommendation: the consultation names the program that fits the dog, and when a smaller one covers it, that is the one you hear.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Does board and train fix growling when moved off furniture?

It can build the alternatives, a place command and an off cue, inside a daily routine, and Behaviour Rehab adds a full assessment of the guarding itself. Fixing is the wrong word, because the growl is information and the context lives in your home. The handover and follow-ups are where the two halves meet.

Which training program is right for growling when moved off furniture?

That depends on the assessment. Behaviour Rehab is built for the growlers and accepts dogs with bite histories after a full assessment; Private Training suits an owner who wants to work the plan at home with coaching. The consultation makes the recommendation.

Why does nobody grab the collar during board and train for this?

Because a hand on the collar is the moment the dog was growling about, and repeating it teaches the dog that the warning did not work, which is how warnings get skipped. We ask for off and reward the dog for choosing it. The method is laid out in our how-to guide on growling when moved off furniture.

Should the dog see a vet before a growling-on-furniture training program?

If the growling is new, or the dog also flinches when touched, yes, and before training rather than after. Pain and guarding can look alike from the sofa, and nobody can tell them apart by ear. Once a vet has had a look, the assessment can do its job.
