Behaviour Rehab owner education: what you learn

Five to six weeks of daily work builds skills in the dog. The owner education exists so those skills make sense to the person the dog lives with. This page sets out what is published about that education, the aims behind it, and a short checklist of questions to bring to the consultation and the handover, so you leave knowing what to watch for and what to ask.

Published inclusions

Three things the education is built to give you.

Behaviour Rehab lists in-depth owner education as an inclusion, and the published aim is that you learn the why, not just the what. That means the reasoning behind your dog's plan is explained to you, not only the cues. Any tool your dog is introduced to, whether a slip lead, a prong collar or an Educator remote collar, is introduced properly and taught to you, because a tool the dog understands and the owner does not is half a tool.

The handover lesson is included, as it is in every board and train, and Behaviour Rehab lists two free follow-up sessions. Beyond those published inclusions, the specific topics depend on what the assessment found for your dog, and we do not publish a fixed syllabus. The next section gives you the questions that will tell you what your own education covers, so you can walk into the handover knowing what to ask and what to listen for.

  • Learn the why, not just the what
  • Every tool taught to you
  • One handover lesson
  • Two free follow-up sessions

Questions to bring

A handover checklist for a rehab dog.

On triggers, we suggest asking what set your dog off during the program, at what distance, and what the early signs looked like on your dog specifically: a stiffened body, a closed mouth, a fixed stare, a change in breathing or pace. Those signs vary from dog to dog, and the distance at which they appear can shift from one day to the next, so ask how to tell a workable distance from one that is too close for your dog on that day.

On safety, ask how to manage doors, gates, windows and greetings at home, what to do if a trigger appears without warning, and when to stop and step away rather than push on. On the follow-ups, ask what the two free sessions are best spent on and how to reach us between them. Ask, too, what would tell you the plan needs adjusting, and how soon you should raise it with us rather than wait.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

What does Behaviour Rehab owner education cover?

The published inclusion is in-depth owner education so you learn the why behind your dog's plan, not just the what, plus instruction on any tool your dog was introduced to. The specific topics depend on what the assessment found for your dog. We suggest asking at the consultation which handling and safety topics will apply to yours.

What will I learn in a dog behaviour program if the trainer does the daily work?

The aim is that you understand the reasoning behind what your dog was taught, and can handle the tools the way they were introduced. The handover lesson and two free follow-up sessions are where that is shown to you with your own dog. The daily work is ours; the understanding has to be yours.

Is there owner training after the dog comes home from rehab?

Yes. Behaviour Rehab includes a handover lesson and two free follow-up sessions. We suggest asking at the handover what those sessions are best used for with your dog.

Does the owner education assume any training experience?

The published aim is plain: you learn the why, not just the what, and every tool your dog was introduced to is taught to you. If you have never handled a slip lead or a remote collar, we suggest saying so at the consultation so we know before the handover.

Ask what you will learn.

Book a consultation and ask which safety and handling topics the education will cover for your dog. We will answer plainly.
