Your first off-leash hike after Functional Off-Leash

The program is done, the collar is charged, and the dog is looking at the car. A first hike as a Functional Off-Leash graduate is less about distance than about choices: which trail, which hour, when the leash comes off and when it goes back on. Here is how we suggest planning it, what to write down afterwards, and the handful of mistakes that can undo good work in a morning.

The first hike

Pick a trail the dog can win on.

Choose a trail where off leash is permitted, and check the land manager's pet rules before you drive out; Alberta Parks publishes its rules for dogs in provincial parks. Go at a quiet hour, keep the loop shorter than you want, and leash up well before the car park on the way back. The leash stays clipped through the trailhead. Unclip only once the dog has settled into the walk and offered a check-in or two on its own.

Reward every voluntary glance back. That look is the habit that keeps a graduate close, and it tends to fade if nobody pays it. Use the collar the way your handover lesson set it up, layered on a recall the dog already knows, never as a brake on a chase. Alberta BearSmart and Alberta Parks wildlife safety guidance explain the signs of wildlife to watch for on a trail. Our suggestion is to leash at the first sign rather than wait for a sighting.

  • Permitted trail, quiet hour
  • Collar used as in handover
  • Reward every glance back
  • Leash at the first sign

After the hike

Write it down while the mud is still wet.

Functional Off-Leash includes a free follow-up session, and it is far more useful with notes. After each hike, record the trail and the hour, how far ahead the dog drifted before checking in, which recalls came on the first cue and which needed the collar, what pulled the dog's attention (scent, a dog, a hiker) and where you leashed up and why. A few hikes of notes gives the follow-up something concrete to work from.

The day-one mistakes are predictable: unclipping in the parking lot, bringing friends and their dogs, going long, repeating the recall word, and letting the dog round a bend out of sight. Each one hands the dog a decision it has not earned yet. Over the season, change one variable per hike, a longer loop or a busier trail or a new area, never all three. If recalls start needing the collar more rather than less, book the follow-up instead of pushing on.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

What should the first off-leash hike after training look like?

Short, quiet and permitted: a trail where off leash is allowed, at an hour with few people, on a loop you turn around on early. The leash stays on through the trailhead and comes off only after the dog has settled and checked in on its own. The collar is used exactly as your handover lesson set it up.

How do I start hiking off leash with my dog after the program?

Start on ground the dog has already walked on leash, so the only new variable is freedom. Reward every check-in, call the dog back before it reaches the edge of your comfort rather than after, and leash up at the first sign of wildlife, as Alberta's wildlife guidance encourages caution around animals. Add one new element per hike, not several.

Can my dog hike off leash with other dogs on the first outing?

We suggest not. Another dog is one of the biggest distractions you can add, and a first hike is for using the recall you built, not testing it against a friend's dog. Once your own hikes are going well, a calm, well-matched dog is a reasonable next variable.

What should I bring to the follow-up session after our first off-leash hikes?

Your notes: trails, hours, how far the dog drifted, which recalls needed the collar and what distracted it. Bring the collar and the leash you have been using, and any video of a recall that did not go to plan. A free follow-up is included with Functional Off-Leash, and specifics make it worth far more.
