Every dog comes when nothing is happening. The recall that matters is the other one: mid-squirrel, mid-play, halfway to a stranger's picnic. Calgary is full of off-leash space, which makes that word the most valuable thing you can teach a dog here, and the most dangerous thing to assume you have. We build it deliberately, in layers, one dog at a time.
The real test

A recall you can trust is not the dog wandering back when the sniffing runs out. It is a dog that breaks off a chase, leaves the play group, and turns on one word, first call, without a treat visible in your hand. That distinction is the entire test. Off leash, the only recall that counts is the one that works when your dog would honestly rather not.
Calgary's off-leash culture raises the stakes. This is a city where dogs get real freedom in big, open off-leash areas, often near pathways, cyclists, wildlife, and other dogs. A shaky recall in that setting is not a quirk, it is a safety problem and, eventually, a leash sentence. The dogs who get to enjoy that freedom for their whole lives are the ones whose word is reliable.

We do not start in the park. Recall begins as a game the dog cannot lose: markers and rewards make your word the best news of the day, first indoors, then with mild distractions, then in the real world. Only once the response is fluent do we add stakes. Tools are matched to the individual dog, and the modern Educator remote collar, introduced properly, is what lets a trained recall hold at distance.
Which program depends on how much reliability you need. Functional Off-Leash (3 weeks, $3,030) builds a recall that holds around distractions, with the Educator collar and your own education included. Advanced Off-Leash (4 weeks, $3,940) adds off-leash heel, distance commands, and public manners, with two follow-ups. Already have foundations? Private sessions at $150 can sharpen a recall that is close but not quite trustworthy. Prices are plus GST.

How much does dog recall training cost in Calgary?
Our recall-focused board and trains run $3,030 for Functional Off-Leash (3 weeks) and $3,940 for Advanced Off-Leash (4 weeks), both plus GST and both including the remote collar. Private sessions are $150 each if you mainly need coaching. A consultation will tell you which level your dog actually needs.
Why won't my dog come when called at the park?
Because the park pays better than you do, and the recall was never trained against that level of competition. Most dogs learn 'come' in a kitchen and are then asked to perform it beside running dogs and squirrels. The fix is layered training and proofing, not a louder voice.
Can you train come when called without an e-collar?
The recall itself is always taught with markers and rewards first; no tool teaches a word. We match tools to the individual dog, and for off-leash reliability at real distance the Educator remote collar, introduced properly, is usually part of the picture. You learn to use it correctly before your dog comes home.
How long does recall training take?
Functional Off-Leash takes three weeks; Advanced Off-Leash takes four. After that, follow-up sessions and your own handling keep the word sharp, because a recall is maintained, not finished. Dogs with a decent foundation can sometimes get there through weekly private sessions instead.
