Off-leash training for retrievers and gundogs

A Labrador or golden tends to follow you anywhere, right up to the moment it sees water, smells a duck, or finds something that died on the beach. Then it is a different dog. Retrievers and spaniels were built to go out hard and bring things back, which is a wonderful instinct and a terrible one to be downstream of. Off leash, the training has to cover the moment the instinct fires.

Teach the recall before the shoreline tests it.

Safety first, because water changes the rules. A long line is your friend on land and a hazard in deep water, where it can snag, so recall near water is built on a short drag line in the shallows, or from dry land, until the recall is solid. Cold or fast water is a reason to keep the dog out. Scent is the other leak: practise recall on a long line across a field where geese have been, calling as the nose drops.

The steady stop is a gundog classic. Dog sits at your side, you toss a bumper into the shallows, and the dog goes only on a release word; if it breaks, you collect the bumper and nothing was earned. Leave it for dead things is taught on leash with safe planted items: an old glove, then something smelly. Never force a carcass out of a retriever's mouth. Trade for food, and if the dog swallows something questionable, call a vet rather than wait.

  • No long line in deep water
  • Recall past goose scent on land
  • Steady sit before the launch
  • Trade, never grab, for carcasses

Proofing at the shore

Water proofing, the dog who greets everyone, and the programs that work on recall.

Water proofing goes in layers. Recall from the water's edge with the dog's paws wet. Recall from belly-deep water, where the dog can still turn easily. Recall from a short swim, with you walking backwards up the bank so coming to you means coming out. Pay the exit with another send into the water; a retriever that learns coming out earns going back in tends to stop arguing about it. Ask for the steady sit before every send, so stop and recall grow together.

Then the social Lab, who treats every other dog as an invitation. Recall away from other dogs works the same way: at a distance where the dog hears you, paid with permission to say hello once the other owner agrees. Functional Off-Leash is built for reliable recall around distractions: three weeks, $3,030 plus GST, remote collar and owner education included. Advanced Off-Leash adds advanced recall and public manners. The consultation decides which fits, and we name the smaller one when it does the job.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

How do I off leash train a labrador?

Start with a recall that is paid well on land, then proof it against the three Lab weaknesses: water, bird scent and dead things. Add a steady sit before every retrieve so the dog learns that going is earned, not grabbed. Keep a leash on near fast or cold water and anywhere you cannot see what is on the shoreline.

How do I get my golden retriever to recall off leash?

Pay the recall with the thing the golden wanted in the first place, usually a send back into the water or a retrieve, so coming to you never ends the fun. Practise on a long line on dry land first, then at the water's edge. If the dog recalls everywhere except around other dogs, that is a separate skill and it is trained at distance.

How do I teach a retriever to recall out of water?

Build it in stages: ankle-deep first, then where the dog can still stand, then a short swim, calling as you back away up the bank. Reward the exit with another send so leaving the water predicts going back in. Never do this with a long line attached in deep water, since it can catch on something below the surface.

How do I stop my lab eating dead things on the beach?

Teach leave it on leash with harmless planted items before you expect it to beat a fish carcass, and keep the dog leashed on shorelines where you cannot see ahead. If the dog already has something, trade for food rather than pulling it from the mouth. Anything swallowed that worries you is a reason to call a vet.
