Mountain biking with a dog
A dog beside a bike is travelling faster than it ever has on a walk, around corners neither of you can see past, toward riders who did not know it was coming. There is no leash to catch a mistake, and a dog that cuts across the front wheel takes you both down. This is the hardest thing you can ask of off-leash training, so the order you build it in matters.

Skills in order
Brakes before the bike, behind before the trail.
Nothing goes near a bike until the dog has a recall and a stop that hold around squirrels, dogs and runners, on foot, unclipped, in a place that allows dogs off leash. Those two are the brakes. Then teach a behind cue while walking the bike: the dog learns that its spot is off your back wheel, not beside the handlebars, and is paid there. Push the bike, then coast, then pedal slowly, keeping the dog behind and stopping the moment it draws level.
Trailheads are their own lesson. Dogs, cars, riders unloading bikes and the scent of every animal that passed in the night can undo a calm dog before the ride starts, so a down beside the bike while you set up is a skill to practise on its own. Then ride short, quiet, flat trails at a pace the dog can hold at a trot. Technical features, descents and busy weekends wait until the behind cue holds without reminders on the boring rides.
- Recall and stop off leash first
- Behind cue while walking the bike
- Down beside the bike at trailheads
- Short flat rides before technical
Where and how
Land rules, pacing and the program to look at.
Check the land designation first. Alberta Parks' Kananaskis regulations state that dogs must be leashed in provincial recreation areas, provincial parks and wildland parks, and that leashing is recommended in Public Land Use Zones; mountain biking is limited to designated trails in recreation areas and provincial parks and, in wildland parks and Public Land Use Zones, kept out of sensitive wildlife areas such as wildlife corridors. Etiquette is simple: slow for anyone on foot, call out at blind corners, leash the dog near other users.
Conditioning for a bike dog is about pace, not distance: a trot the dog can hold is sustainable, a gallop to keep up is not. Have a vet weigh in before the dog becomes a regular riding partner, and end any ride where the dog is working to keep up. Advanced Off-Leash is the program whose skill list reads like a bike dog's job description: off-leash heel, advanced recall, sit, stay and down at distance, public manners and advanced distraction training.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
What training does a dog need for mountain biking?
A recall and a stop that hold off leash around distractions, then a behind cue that keeps the dog off your back wheel, then calm at trailheads. Only after those three come short, quiet rides, and everything technical waits until the behind cue holds without a reminder. Advanced Off-Leash covers that list over four weeks, with two follow-ups and a remote collar included.
How do you train a trail dog to run with a bike?
Start with the bike walked, not ridden, and reward the dog for staying behind the back wheel. Progress to coasting, then slow pedalling on flat ground, stopping the instant the dog draws level with you. The bike is a faster version of heel, and the dog has to know where its spot is before any speed is involved.
How fast should a trail dog run beside a bike?
At a trot it can hold, not a gallop to keep up, which means your pace drops to the dog's rather than the other way round. A dog sprinting to stay with you is being conditioned badly and is more likely to cut in front when it tires. Ask a vet about age and joints before biking together becomes routine.
Can a dog ride off leash with you in Kananaskis?
Not in the provincial parks, provincial recreation areas or wildland parks of Kananaskis, where Alberta Parks regulations require dogs to be leashed. In Public Land Use Zones leashing is recommended rather than required, and a Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required to park a vehicle. Check the designation of the specific trail before you plan an off-leash ride.
