Dog training for shift workers
Four on, four off. Nights this week, days the next. A twelve-hour rotation flips the dog's day every few days, and the standard advice about a consistent schedule assumes you have one. A lot of Calgary works this way: oil and gas, health care, emergency services. So we build the routine to bend without breaking, sort out who covers the long stretches, and then pick a training format that fits the shifts you work.

A routine that flips
Anchor the day to events, not to the clock.
A dog cannot read a schedule, but many dogs learn a sequence quickly. We suggest picking one order and keeping it: outside, a walk, the meal, a settle with a chew, then the alone-time block. That order is an example, not a rule; what matters is that the same events follow each other, so the dog has something predictable when the clock is not. Dogs vary in how much shifting they tolerate, and some take longer to settle into it than others.
Sleep days are the hard part. Off a night shift into a minus-30 morning, the dog needs its outing before you need your blackout curtains. We recommend running the same sequence, settling the dog with white noise and a chew, and booking a walker or family member for the middle of the long block. Short, boring departures practised on days off are the groundwork for a closed bedroom door. Some dogs still find nights hard, and that is worth raising with us early.
- Same sequence, any start time
- Walk, feed, then settle
- Cover the long alone block
- Practise departures on days off
Formats that fit
Match the program to the rotation, not the other way round.
Day Training runs Monday to Friday, drop-off 8 to 10 am, pick-up 5 to 7 pm, at $650 plus GST per week, with a weekly one-hour go-home session. That covers an eight-hour day shift with a short commute. A twelve-hour day shift plus travel runs past at least one end of the window, often both, so someone else would need to cover that end. On nights, drop-off lands close to bedtime for many people; whether that works depends on your commute and when you sleep.
Board and train does not depend on your hours while the dog is with us. On-Leash Foundations is two weeks at $1,865 plus GST, with a handover lesson and a free follow-up session. Whether the dates line up with a work block is a question for the consultation, not a promise we make here. Private Training, $150 plus GST per one-hour session with a written weekly plan, slots into days off and asks the least of a rotation.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Can I have a dog if I work night shifts?
Many people do, and in our experience it goes better when the dog's day is built on a fixed sequence of events rather than fixed times, with someone covering the long block while you sleep. We recommend practising departures deliberately before the first night rotation. Some dogs still struggle with nights despite careful preparation, and that is worth an honest conversation before you commit.
What is a good dog routine for night shift?
One example we suggest: outside and a walk as soon as you get home, then the meal, then a settle with white noise and a chew while you sleep, with a walker or family member breaking up the afternoon. When you wake, the same sequence runs again before you leave. The exact order matters less than keeping it the same.
How do I manage a dog on 12 hour shifts?
Twelve hours plus travel is a long stretch for many dogs to be alone, so we recommend a midpoint: a walker, a neighbour or a family member. Day Training's 8 to 10 am drop-off and 5 to 7 pm pick-up does not stretch across a twelve-hour shift on its own, so it would still need a second person at one end. At home, we suggest keeping the same event sequence whether your day starts at 5 am or 5 pm.
Which training program works with a rotating schedule?
It depends on the shift length, the commute and who else is home, which is why we recommend the format at the consultation rather than from the rotation's name. Day Training suits day shifts that sit inside its hours and a real day off for the weekly go-home session. Board and train takes the daily logistics off your plate while the dog is with us, and Private Training at $150 plus GST per one-hour session fits days off with a written weekly plan to run in between.
