Dog training in Varsity, Calgary
Varsity walks in two directions. West, the Bow River pathway, where bikes, strollers and other leashed dogs share a strip of asphalt. The other way, a short drive to Nose Hill Park, where the grass opens up and the coyotes have right of way. A lot of Varsity dogs are in their middle years, living with retirees or in condos, and they need manners that work in both places.

Walking Varsity
Two walks, two very different skill sets.
Start with the pathway. On Calgary pathways a dog must be leashed on two metres or less, so the Bow River route you reach from the west side of Varsity is a leash-manners test every single outing. Bikes come from behind, strollers take the middle, and another dog is always coming the other way. A Varsity dog needs a loose leash that stays loose past all of it, and a sit that holds while a cyclist rings past.
Nose Hill Park is the other test. The City lists designated off-leash areas there, spread over grassland and coulees where deer and coyotes roam, which is exactly where a recall gets proven or exposed. A mid-life dog with years of practice ignoring the word come will not improve by being let loose and hoped at. Off-leash on Nose Hill is earned with a recall that beats a deer, and until then the leash stays on.

Most Varsity dogs come to us as adults with one fixable problem: the leash. That is why the two-week On-Leash Foundations board and train at $1,865 plus GST is the program Varsity owners pick most often. It builds loose-leash walking, heel, sit, down, stay and place around everyday distractions, then sends the dog home with a handover lesson and free follow-ups. Dogs with Nose Hill ambitions move up to Functional Off-Leash, three weeks at $3,030 with the Educator e-collar included.
Owners who commute to the university or the mall can use Day Training at $650 a week, drop-off between 8 and 10 am and pick-up between 5 and 7 pm, with a weekly one-hour go-home lesson. Retirees who want to do the work themselves often prefer private sessions at $150, walked on their own Varsity streets with a written weekly plan. Honesty note: Nose Hill's off-leash boundaries are set by the City's posted map, so confirm the current one on calgary.ca before you unclip.

The Bow River pathway can wait until the puppy has manners; a follow-up session within 60 days keeps things on track.
Can you help with dog obedience in Varsity for an older dog?
Absolutely. Middle-aged dogs learn leash manners and a solid recall just fine; what changes is how long the old habit has been rehearsed. On-Leash Foundations or a run of private sessions is usually the right starting point, and we will say so if the smaller option fits.
