Dog training for equestrian properties
A barn dog has a harder job than a house dog. It shares a yard with animals that outweigh it many times over and spook at shadows, with a farrier bent double under one of them, with riders who are not watching the ground, and with trailers backing in. The dog that fits a barn is not the most obedient one; it is the one that has learned to be boring around all of it.

Four barn skills
Boring around horses is the goal, built in a set order.
Safety before any exercise: a kick can kill a dog, so until each skill is proven the dog is on a leash an adult is holding, crated in the tack room, or behind a closed gate whenever horses are handled, shod or ridden. Neutrality starts at the far end of the aisle, on leash, paid for glancing at a horse and looking back at you, and the distance shrinks only while the dog stays relaxed enough to eat.
Then the settle: a bed at the arena rail, outside the kick zone, where a lesson in progress becomes background noise. Trailers and trucks: parked, then idling, then moving, with the dog on leash and far enough away to think. The recall is proofed against movement on a long line, with a person jogging or a horse led past, and never tested on a real loose horse. If one gets out, the dog is secured first and the horse caught second.
- Dog secured before horses move
- Neutrality from the aisle's far end
- Place bed outside the kick zone
- Never test recall on a loose horse
Programs and management
Public manners, transplanted to a barn aisle.
A barn asks for the manners of a busy public place: hold a position while strangers, animals and machines move around you, heel through a crowded aisle, and come when called off something exciting. Advanced Off-Leash, 4 weeks at $3,940 + GST, is built for that combination, with off-leash heel, sit, down and stay at distance, public manners, advanced distraction work and a remote collar you are taught to use. On-Leash Foundations ($1,865 + GST, 2 weeks) covers the leash, place and everyday distractions first.
Whichever program the consultation lands on, the management stays after graduation. The dog is never loose in the arena while anyone rides, never underfoot during a farrier visit, and never left to greet a horse through a fence unattended. Kids ride; they do not hold the leash or test the recall. Hoof trimmings and the grain room are kept out of reach rather than argued over. A dog that stalks or nips at horses needs a professional assessment first.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
What does barn dog training actually cover?
Four things: staying neutral around horses in the aisle and paddock, settling on a bed at the arena rail during rides and lessons, staying calm while trucks and trailers move, and coming when called off a moving horse. Each is built on leash first, with the dog secured whenever horses are being handled.
How do you teach a dog manners at a horse barn?
Start with management so nobody gets hurt: leash, crate or closed gate whenever horses are moving, shod or ridden. Then pay the dog for glancing at a horse and looking back at you from the far end of the aisle, and shrink the distance only while the dog stays relaxed. The settle on a bed comes after neutrality, not before.
Is an equestrian property dog better off with on-leash or off-leash training?
On-Leash Foundations covers the leash, place and everyday distractions and is where a dog with no manners yet begins. Advanced Off-Leash is built for a dog expected to heel through an aisle and hold a down while riders pass. The consultation recommends one, and the smaller program when it is enough.
Can a dog that chases horses be trained to stop?
Chasing a horse is dangerous for both animals, so the dog is contained first and assessed by a professional before any exercise. Training then works on a recall and a down proofed against movement on a long line, far from the horses at first. The recall is never tested on a real loose horse.
