Day training

Day training for socialization

Socialization gets counted like a scoreboard: the more dogs your dog meets, the better. In our experience a dog who meets fifty dogs at full speed can just as easily learn that other dogs mean chaos. Day Training treats socialization as a skill with a goal: calm exposure, supervised play, and a dog who can see another dog and stay in its own head. Here is what that means, and what it does not.

What structured means

Exposure with a goal attached.

Structured socialization is exposure with a goal attached. The goal we train toward is neutrality: your dog notices another dog, a stranger, a skateboard, and carries on with what it was doing. Supervised play means we are watching, rather than leaving dogs to sort it out among themselves. Neutrality is a training target, not a verdict on your dog's inner life; a calm dog can still be uneasy, and a bouncy one can be perfectly comfortable.

The weekly one-hour go-home lesson is where you come into it. It is owner education: you, your dog and us in the same hour, on what the week has been working toward, and where you bring your questions. We do not promise that one hour makes you fluent; what it does is keep you in the loop, so the standard we hold on a weekday is one you have seen and can keep practising.

  • Calm exposure, not a headcount
  • Play supervised, not left to chance
  • Neutrality is the training goal

Reading the signs

Fear, reactivity and inexperience can look alike.

A dog who wants every dog it sees, and a dog unsure about all of them, can both be short on calm exposure. So can the rescued adult with decent house manners and no reference point for a busy sidewalk. For dogs like these, weekdays of structured socialization and supervised play work on that reference point while the dog still sleeps at home. Whether it fits yours is a consultation question, not a rule we can write here.

A dog who freezes, tucks behind your legs or explodes on leash when another dog appears may be frightened, may be reactive, may have had little exposure, and those often overlap. Until the dog has been assessed, give it more room, skip the crowded park, and treat a growl as information rather than defiance. Anxiety, reactivity and aggression are what Behaviour Rehab is built for, customized after a full assessment; the consultation recommends the program, and a smaller one when it is enough.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Does day training include socialization?

Yes. Structured socialization, supervised play and enrichment are part of every Day Training weekday, alongside one-on-one obedience development and manners reinforcement. Structured means the exposure has a goal, a dog who notices and stays settled, rather than an open yard.

What is a dog socialization day program like?

Ours runs Monday to Friday, with drop-off 8 to 10 am and pick-up 5 to 7 pm, at $650 + GST per week. The day holds one-on-one training, structured socialization, supervised play and enrichment, and manners reinforcement. Once a week you join us for a one-hour go-home lesson.

What does structured socialization for dogs actually mean?

It means exposure with a goal rather than a headcount: the dog is helped toward noticing other dogs and people and staying settled, and play is supervised instead of left to run its course. Neutrality is the training target, not a claim about how the dog feels inside. We read each dog as we go.

Can a fearful or reactive dog do day training for socialization?

That is a question for the consultation rather than a rule we state here, because fear, reactivity and limited exposure can look alike and often overlap. Behaviour Rehab is our program for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, and it is customized after a full assessment. In the meantime, give your dog space and treat a growl as information.
