Day training

Day training for separation anxiety

Separation-related distress is hard to work on for a simple reason: it happens when nobody is home to see it. So it is fair to ask what a weekday program can honestly offer. Here we lay out what Day Training includes, what it does not, where a vet belongs in the conversation, and what to bring to the consultation so the recommendation fits your dog rather than a label.

What the week holds

A supervised weekday is not the same as being left.

Day Training runs Monday to Friday at $650 + GST per week, with drop-off between 8 and 10 am and pick-up between 5 and 7 pm. The day itself is one-on-one training, obedience development, structured socialization, supervised play and enrichment, and manners reinforcement. Nothing on that list is an alone-time protocol, and we will not pretend a busy day with us stands in for the quiet house your dog struggles with.

What the week can offer a dog like this is what it offers any dog: a structured weekday, daily one-on-one work on obedience and manners, and a one-hour go-home lesson each week for you and your dog. Whether that helps your particular dog, and how it fits with evenings and weekends at home, is the honest question. We would rather answer it at the consultation than sell you a week and find out afterwards.

  • Weekday obedience and socialization
  • No alone-time protocol included
  • Ask your vet about panic
  • Consultation recommends the program

Vet, then consultation

Distress gets a vet's eyes before a trainer's plan.

If your dog is hurting itself, soiling despite being house-trained, tearing at doors, or the behaviour started suddenly, ask your vet first. Pain or illness can sometimes look like anxiety from the outside, which is why ruling that out is a vet's job, not ours. In the meantime, manage absences as best you can rather than leaving the dog to rehearse panic, and do not punish the noise or the mess afterwards; adding fear to fear rarely helps.

Then bring the picture to the consultation: what your dog does in the minutes after you leave, whether the crate is a refuge or a fight, and whether it has ever injured itself. Behaviour Rehab is the program built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, customized after a full assessment. Day Training is built for a dog who needs consistent work and an owner who wants it home every night. Which program fits is decided at the consultation, where a smaller program is recommended whenever it is enough.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Does day training help with separation anxiety?

Day Training is an obedience and socialization program, and we do not present it as a separation-anxiety treatment. Whether its structure suits your dog is a consultation question, and a vet conversation comes first if your dog panics or hurts itself when left. Behaviour Rehab is the program built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, after a full assessment.

Is doggy day training good for an anxious dog?

Some dogs settle into a busy, supervised day and others find any handover hard, and either is useful to know before you book. What a weekday with us does not do is rehearse the quiet house, because your dog is not alone here. Tell us at the consultation what the anxiety looks like and we will take it from there.

Is there a day program for a dog with separation anxiety?

Our Day Training runs Monday to Friday, drop-off 8 to 10 am and pick-up 5 to 7 pm, at $650 + GST per week, with a one-hour go-home lesson each week. It is not built around separation anxiety; the program built for anxiety is Behaviour Rehab, planned after a full assessment. The recommendation itself happens at the consultation.

Will a full day away make the anxiety worse?

We cannot say in advance how your dog will take a supervised day away from home; some dogs relax into it and some do not. If any handover is a struggle, raise it at the consultation rather than discovering it on a Monday morning. A sudden change in behaviour is also a reason to ask your vet.

Start with the honest picture.

Tell us what your dog does when you leave, and what your vet has said. Book a consultation and we will recommend from there.
