Day training

Day training for high-energy dogs

Some dogs were bred for a job and got a living room instead. They meet you at the door after work with a day's worth of stored-up ideas, and one walk often barely dents them. Day training gives that dog daily one-on-one training on weekdays, with supervised play and enrichment as part of the day, and sends it home to you each evening. Below: what a day holds, and what no program changes.

The weekday program

Where the energy goes between drop-off and pick-up.

Between drop-off at 8 to 10 am and pick-up at 5 to 7 pm, the dog works one-on-one with us on obedience development and manners reinforcement, and the day also includes structured socialization, supervised play and enrichment. The dog is not in a group at any point. For a dog with a lot of drive, enrichment is mental work rather than filler, and the obedience asks the dog to think while it is excited, which for many busy dogs is the unfamiliar part.

The dog comes home every night, which is a feature of the format rather than a compromise. Whatever we worked on during the day can be tried in your house the same evening, and the weekly one-hour go-home lesson is where you see the cues in use, try them with us watching, and hear what we did with the dog that week. We do not promise what the dog will feel like by Friday, because that varies with the dog.

The honest limit

A program does not shrink a breed's needs.

A husky, a heeler or a young lab usually still wants what its breeding asks for after training, and no program changes that. Day training works on obedience and manners, and practising a settle on cue is part of what manners work can include. It is not a replacement for the exercise and outlet your individual dog needs, and we will not tell you a trained dog needs less of them. Tell us at the consultation how much exercise your dog gets now.

What you build around the training at home is yours to shape, and we would rather offer examples than a prescription. One evening might hold a short structured walk, dinner, then a chew on the dog's bed; another might centre on a food puzzle and an early night. Predictable tends to matter more than long. The weekend, with no drop-off and no pick-up, is where you find out how much of the week has come home with the dog.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Is day training a good fit for a high-energy dog?

Day training is meant for a dog that needs consistent work and an owner who wants it home each night, which describes many busy dogs. The weekday program pairs daily one-on-one training with structured socialization, supervised play and enrichment. Whether it is the right program for your dog is decided at the consultation, and we will recommend a smaller option if that covers it.

What does a day program for a hyper dog involve?

Monday to Friday, with drop-off between 8 and 10 am and pick-up between 5 and 7 pm. The day holds one-on-one obedience development, manners reinforcement, structured socialization, supervised play and enrichment. The weekly one-hour go-home lesson is the part you attend.

Does dog day training count as exercise?

Supervised play and enrichment are part of every day and involve movement, but day training is a training program, not an exercise service. How much physical exercise your dog needs is an individual question that the program does not answer for you. Plan the dog's exercise separately rather than counting on training to cover it.

Will day training wear a dog out enough to skip the evening walk?

We would not plan on it. Day training works on obedience and manners; it does not change what your dog needs in the way of exercise, and we do not promise a tired dog at pick-up. Your dog's exercise stays your call, with your vet's input if you are unsure how much is right for its age and build.
