Tuscany off-leash area

The City's map TUS-001 draws the Tuscany off-leash area as a strip east of the Tuscarora streets, with Stoney Trail NW beyond it and Tuscany Blvd NW at its south end. We walk through what the map shows, the rules once the leash comes off, and why an area beside a coulee where the City says to watch for deer and coyotes is a recall question before it is a play question.

The City map

What map TUS-001 actually draws.

The City's map is titled Tuscany (TUS-001) Off Leash Area and dated May 2018. It draws the off-leash boundary as a strip east of the Tuscarora streets, with Crowchild Trail NW and Stoney Trail NW beyond it and the south tip reaching toward Tuscany Blvd NW. The legend marks off-leash signs, garbage cans, benches and a pathway connector line running through the area. Neither the map nor the City's off-leash list mentions fencing, so our cited sources do not confirm whether the area is enclosed.

Two rules matter inside the boundary. The bylaw page says dogs in a designated off-leash area must remain in sight of their owners and respond to sight or sound commands. The City's off-leash page adds that dogs must be on leash on any paved pathway inside an off-leash area, and notes that every City off-leash area is multi-use, so other park users share the ground. The City lists a second Tuscany area, south of Tuscany Blvd NW, with its own map.

  • Dog stays in sight
  • Responds to sight or sound commands
  • Leash on for paved pathways
  • Boundary checked on the map

Coulee edge recall

Deer, coyotes and the recall question.

The City's 12 Mile Coulee page counts this area, and the one south of the boulevard, as that park's two off-leash areas, and it tells visitors to watch for deer, coyotes and porcupines. That is the honest context for unclipping here. A recall that holds in a backyard does not establish that a dog is ready to leave a deer; the two asks share a word and little else. We would rather a dog met that test in training than at the coulee edge.

Functional Off-Leash is the three-week board and train, $3,030 plus GST, built for dogs with decent manners who are ready to earn real freedom: the river path, the off-leash park, the campsite. It works on reliable recall around distractions, off-leash house manners and distraction training, and includes a Micro or Mini Educator remote collar. Advanced Off-Leash, four weeks at $3,940 plus GST, adds off-leash heel and sit, stay and down at distance. The consultation is where we recommend one, or something smaller.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Where is the Tuscany off leash area?

The City map (TUS-001) draws it east of the Tuscarora streets in Tuscany NW, with Crowchild Trail NW and Stoney Trail NW on the far side and Tuscany Blvd NW at its south end. A second Tuscany area sits south of the boulevard and has its own City map.

Is there a Tuscany dog park in Calgary?

The City designates off-leash areas inside multi-use parks rather than naming dog parks as such. Tuscany has two of them on the City's NW list, Area 1 and Area 2, and the 12 Mile Coulee page counts them as that park's off-leash areas.

Is the off leash park in Tuscany NW fenced?

The City sources we cite do not confirm it either way. The off-leash locations list carries no fenced note for Tuscany and the TUS-001 map draws no fence line, but a missing symbol is not the same as an answer. We suggest treating it as open ground and checking on site before unclipping.

What are the rules in the Tuscany off leash area?

Inside the area, a dog must stay in sight, respond to sight or sound commands, and be back on leash on any paved pathway. In public places where dogs are permitted but no off-leash designation applies, Calgary's bylaw requires a leash, two metres or shorter on a pathway, and some places, such as playgrounds, are closed to dogs altogether.

Ready for the coulee edge

A recall that has to compete with deer is a fair question for us. Book a consultation and we will map the next step.
