Best off-leash dog parks in Calgary
Calgary has 160 public off-leash areas, which is a lot of grass for a dog that can be trusted, and a lot of ways for one that cannot to find a coyote, a cyclist or a river. This is a guide to the parks worth the drive, what each one asks of your dog, and the recall standard we want to see before the leash comes off.

What good looks like
Room to move away, and a reason to come back.
A good off-leash park is measured in escape routes. Your dog needs space to move away from a pushy dog, sightlines so you see what is coming before it arrives, and ground that lets you keep walking while the dog checks in. Water is a bonus in summer and a hazard during spring melt. Fencing matters only while recall is unproven, which is a training gap, not a park feature.
The honest warning: an off-leash park is not socialization for a reactive or unsure dog. It is a crowd of strangers with no referee. A dog that already stiffens on the leash will practise stiffening there, off leash, with an audience. Under the City's bylaw a dog in an off-leash area must stay in sight and respond to voice, sound or visual commands. If yours cannot yet, the park is a goal, not a plan.

By quadrant
The parks worth the drive, and what each asks of your dog.
Northwest: Nose Hill, a big exposed grassland with designated off-leash zones inside it, on-leash areas elsewhere, several parking lots and coyotes year-round, so recall around wildlife is the entry fee. Bowmont, on the north bank of the Bow, has river access, steep sections and one fenced site. Southwest: Edworthy, west of downtown, with two off-leash areas and river access, and River Park along the ridge above the Elbow with Sandy Beach below, both busy and social.
Southeast: Sue Higgins on the Bow River pathway, big, treed, with river access, listed by the City as fenced, and one of the busiest off-leash scenes in town on weekends. Northeast: Tom Campbell's Hill near Bridgeland, a steep hillside with downtown views and a crowd from the condos below. Check the City's Off-Leash Dog Areas map before you go: boundaries change, and paved pathways inside off-leash areas are on-leash, two metres maximum.

For a dog with a solid recall: Nose Hill, Sue Higgins, River Park and Sandy Beach, Bowmont, Edworthy and Tom Campbell's Hill, spread across all four quadrants. The right one depends on the dog: open grassland for one that needs room, a fenced site such as Sue Higgins while recall is still being proven.
How many off leash parks does Calgary have?
At the time of writing the City of Calgary lists 160 public off-leash areas inside its multi-use parks, most of them open and a handful fenced. The current list and boundaries live on the City's Off-Leash Dog Areas map, which beats any blog list, including this one.

Almost certainly, since the City has off-leash areas in every quadrant. Search the City's Off-Leash Dog Areas map by address, then check whether the area is fenced or open and whether a paved pathway runs through it, because dogs must be leashed on pathways even inside off-leash areas.
What are the rules at off leash dog parks in Calgary?
Your dog must be licensed, stay in your sight and respond to your commands, and on any paved pathway it must be on a leash no longer than two metres. You must pick up after it. At the time of writing the City lists a $500 fine for not picking up and a $100 fine for failing to control a dog in an off-leash area.
